Welcome back to another episode of Brewers Babes, a Milwaukee Brewers and Baseball fan podcast for babes by babes. I'm Aaron. And I'm a very sick Lisa. Oh, sorry. So, as we all know, the Padres swept the Cubs in the wildcard series earlier this week, setting them up to play the division series against the Brewers, which kicked off on Saturday night. After two games, the Brewers lead the division series two to nothing. And holy shit, do we need to talk about all of this? All of it. Let's fucking go. Let's go.
SPEAKER_00Okay, so full disclaimer, I am very sick, and I did spend most of this weekend quite delirious. I have my support beverages with me, so I apologize for both the Wisconsin accent and like the nasally version of it. But I wanted to show you this because look, it's the City Connect. Oh, it's the Wisco uh the little cop tumbler.
SPEAKER_01Oh, cute.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Okay. Well, I'm here to tell you that as delirious as you were watching these games, everything that you saw did happen. I know. All that shit actually happened, if you can believe it. Incredible. Amazing. Uh let's start with game one. All right, cool. Game one.
SPEAKER_00The Miz came out fucking fired up. What I remember about this is the fucking Fox announcers, who I'm sure we'll talk about it a little bit. The announcers be like, oh, I can't, you know, Miz is gonna probably throw some heat. He might hit a 101, 102. Dude comes out with 105 back to back. Yep. That was great. That was a great way to start the series.
SPEAKER_01How amped is this kid? I was like, holy shit, like he has got some adrenaline coming out throwing heat like that.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, he said, he had said, I don't even mean for that to happen. Sometimes it just happens. A freak. Miz is a freak.
SPEAKER_01It got a little a little scary there in the in the second inning. You know, I gave up a couple of runs, but um overall, four innings pitch, six strikeouts.
SPEAKER_00He did not have a good game. That was one of the worst Ms. outings that I've seen. I think he just needed a calm down.
SPEAKER_01Yes, I agree.
SPEAKER_00He needed a calm down.
SPEAKER_01Not to get into overall vibes before we talk about what happened in the game, but like as I'm watching them play the pitching and the batting, every season of the postseason, I go back and forth. I'm like, oh, we should get a bye week. We shouldn't have to play a wild card series since we won a division, even though we've got the third best record, you know, and then it's like, oh, we got a bye week. Like the Padres are coming off of a sweep. How fucking amped are they? We haven't done anything in a whole week. They got their postseason like nerves and jitters out already, sweeping the Cubs, and we're coming in here, you know, game one with like everybody all amped and adrenaline and stuff like that. Like, knowing we got Henderson coming up tomorrow, you know, the next day, who's a total rookie, hasn't pitched in the postseason before. And I kind of like, whichever side we're on, I feel like we're at a disadvantage, you know, and like as cocky as I want to be about it. I'm like, if the situation were reversed, I'm not sure if I'd be saying the same thing, but I'm kind of like, you know, they got to blow out the Cubs for two whole days and and come into this series feeling good, feeling high, and we're like, oh shit.
SPEAKER_00I think as a Brewers fan, you have a moral obligation to be nervous and jittery about literally everything in the postseason. Like that's just it's built into it. But I mean, think about last year coming off of game five with the Cubs was the highest high I've ever felt as a Brewers fan. The game five. And then game one, NLCS. That we did not carry that momentum in there. No. So I think it was fine for Miz. What was it? It was the second batter or Harris. That's his name, right? He took eight or nine pitches.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And then, and then Manny Machado got that a double off of what seven or eight pitches. I was like, oh, I know what's gonna happen here. Everybody's gonna be mad at Contreras for calling a cutter a lot or calling the slider, which like the announcers can't tell a difference from, but that's fair because the slider's super fast. But Contreras doesn't make those calls in a vacuum. He discusses those calls with people, you know, like Chris Hook and Murph, they all have a plan going in, and they're not just like, oh, we're going to the postseason while Bill, like, good luck out there, do what you want to do. Like, there's a there's a strategy, and I just I don't think it's fair to put it all on Contreras for making those calls if he was trying to follow some sort of strategy that just didn't work. It didn't work. And to be fair, they were hitting his fastball. I don't know what they had done to prepare, but they were following off 103, 104 pitches like nobody's business. So, of course, you're gonna try to throw him off with an off-speed pitch. You have to if they're making contact with that fastball all the time.
SPEAKER_02Yep.
SPEAKER_00So I don't know, it was an ugly outing for Miz, but would I want him again for a game five? Yes, absolutely. Put him back on, uh-huh. Give him the ball.
SPEAKER_01Uh the bullpen performance was pretty decent. Ashby looked great, Deal Hall did pretty good. Uribe, not so much, but he redeemed himself in game two. Um, Trevor McGill with a four-out save. That's always fun. Yes, Trevor McGill.
SPEAKER_00And with that third out in the eighth, that was very pretty.
SPEAKER_01Yes, it was. Oh my god.
SPEAKER_00That was just very, very, very pretty. Love it. And then yeah, that ninth inning was ninth inning was good. It was a close game. I I think I texted you this. I don't know if my heart can take every postseason game being like that. It's it's hard.
SPEAKER_01Oh my god, dude. I won't I watched the condensed game again today. And even though I knew what was gonna happen, I was still getting stressed out watching them load up the bases twice. I was like, oh my god, we're this is too close of a game for this. But like the offense, we had Churio with a game tying home run in the third, his hardest hit career home run. Was it really? Yep, hardest hit home run of his career and the most postseason homers in franchise history for a brewer, which is pretty fucking incredible.
SPEAKER_00I mean, he's 22-year-old baby. I know, and for anybody who wants to criticize or critique anything he does next year, I just want to ask you what you were doing at 22. Just what were you doing? Go ahead and think back. Go ahead. No, that's the point. You don't want to leave him alone. No, uh, no, it was great. His homer was perfect.
SPEAKER_01It was yeah, but yelly did get a hit. He had a nice little single in there. Yelly got the first hit of the game, yeah. He did, and then obviously Contreras with that giant home run at the bottom of the seventh, and is like his home run trot took forever because he had to stop and do this between on his way to first base.
SPEAKER_00He didn't even he didn't even slow trot, he just stopped and stood there.
SPEAKER_01Good, do it, yep, do it. I love it, I love that. Fucking love it, and then they showed uh Sal. Oh, Sal at Battle Cage, but yeah, super scary, very scary, but we did it, and then obviously we have to talk about Ty France's high fly ball in the ninth inning. Oh, trust gate. Trust gate. I have roof gate in my notes.
SPEAKER_00It is a truss, right? That's like I don't know, I don't know, roof engineering terminology. Is that what it's called?
SPEAKER_01Probably.
SPEAKER_00I mean, they're calling it a cable. That's why they call it a trust club. That's what they're building next year, and it doesn't really matter. The point is that it wouldn't have been a home run. It would not have been a home run.
SPEAKER_01So nobody, if you're listening to this podcast, there's no way you missed this. But the ball hit a truss, a cable. Maybe the truss holds the cable.
SPEAKER_00I don't know. I'm not an engineer.
SPEAKER_01The only time I've ever heard that term is when I was reading a book about freight trains to my son, and it said something about going over trussles. I assume that's a similar I'm just gonna google what is a truss now.
SPEAKER_00It's a rigid framework made of straight beams, barbs, barns, bars, or rods connected at joints to support a roof or other heavy structure.
SPEAKER_01Alright, well, there you go. Right, there you go. It did hit the truss, it hit the cable. Hit the cable. Um, and it bounced uh straight down, and Churio caught it in fair territory, and everybody freaked out.
SPEAKER_00It wasn't perfectly straight. It did still kind of arc. It did. And Churio's movement towards the ball, just a good read on it. It wasn't gonna be a homer, but it I don't think this would have been egregious at all had it not been for the announcers saying over and over again, is that gonna be a home run? That's gonna be a home run, that's gotta be a home run. Like, shut the fuck up, Adam Wayne, right?
SPEAKER_01What did you think that they were gonna do? And then looking back on the meeting of the umpires in the ninth inning of game one, and then looking at their just god fucking awful performance on in game two, 10 overturn ABS calls, 10. And those are just the ones that were challenged. I mean, come on. So, like, just awful, just hot fucking garbage. You want those guys to go out there and be like, oh, it would have been a home run, so you know, we're gonna call it one. Like, you want those guys in charge of making those fucking decisions? Fuck you. Are you kidding me? No, you know, let's say the same thing about like uh I think it was Cronenworth who caught just diving catch to stop what would have been a base hit for sure. Like, do you want them to like argue that too? Like, well, that would have been the way he hit that now. Yeah, if he hadn't caught it, it would have been a base hit.
SPEAKER_00So let's give him a base hit. Like, are you fucking kidding me? Like, what I think is the most really though, is the announcers just saying, is that a home run? I think that's a home run. They're gonna call that a homer. Put on your brains for 12 seconds before you open your mouth. Just general advice. Yeah, just turn on your brain and think and use it and then open your mouth. Because then we all there's no way. There's no way in the history of baseball, an ump is gonna say, Boy oh boy, if that ball had kept going, it would have been out. I'm gonna call it a homer. Right. What's wrong with you? They could have they could have gone other ways, they could have called it a foul, which I think is a legitimate grievance that the Padres fans could have, because I do think that ball was gonna be foul. But but you can't say they're gonna call that a homer. They're they're gonna say that's a homer because they're using their eyeballs to guess where it would have landed. Yeah, like ridiculous. Oh, really? Do you did they know the backspin rate of that ball? Like, because that's what it was. The ball was going so high because it had really fast backspin. Yeah. When the ball goes high like that, if you're a catcher, you're taught, even though the ball is going like behind the plate, right? Somebody hits a follow up way behind the plate. If you do that as a catcher, you're taught to go back because the ball will always go back towards the field of play. The back spin makes it go back towards it. So it's not a perfect parabola. You can't assume it's gonna be a parabola like that. It was just a dumb thing for the announcers to say, and I really think that's why everybody got so riled up.
SPEAKER_01I think you're right. Because then we had to address it. And they even went and asked, they went and asked Thai France afterwards. They're like, What did you think? He's like, Well, I think I had I think I put the right type of spin on it. I'm pretty sure that would have gone out. It's like so off, dude. Shut up. You could tell by the look on his face after he hit it that he thought it was going foul.
SPEAKER_00It it is legitimate that it's a foul. I do I like the rule that you just if it's in fairy territory, you play it. I think that's fine. I think if you're gonna hit a ball that touches the roof, why not? Yeah. Maybe you want to make it a dead ball next year. Go ahead. I don't, I don't care. It's just but you know who that's gonna benefit more than anybody is the team that plays there the most. That's true. Oh, go ahead.
SPEAKER_01I just the whole thing is just stupid. The whole argument, like the whole the fact that we had to argue about it is really dumb because it's like it's in the rule book. Like if it hits the roof and it lands in it's a fair ball if it stays in fair territory. Like, that's it. Like, read the fucking there's it's a rule. I'm sorry, I don't know what you want me to do.
SPEAKER_00And it's not a brewer's rule, and the brewers don't decide if the roof gets open. I heard even Trevor Plouf on some clip. I heard him say that the brewers decide if the roof is open or not. No, it doesn't. No, they don't stop talking out of your ass, people. Just like all I've heard for the last like six days around baseball is just random men saying things out of their butts without actually having anything to back it up. I'm so tired of it. It's really annoying. You can't just say it. You're right, it's bullshit. The brewers do not decide if the roof is open or not. Do you did you see the clip though of before the game? The managers and the umps and some of the coaching staff were all out before the game going over the rules. The umps are going over some of the rules of Miller Park because each park has its own special shit, and that's part of baseball.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And they were like, you know, if it hits the roof, here's what happens. It lands, it's in foul territory, it's foul. If it's fair, it's fair play. Blah, blah, blah. And then I forget which Brewer's coach it is, but he says, I've never seen that happen in six years, so it's definitely gonna happen tonight. And then and then they all just went, ha ha ha ha ha ha ha. Wow. Yeah, you don't, you know, those are the baseball gods are listening to you. They are, I think they are. They are that's funny. Yeah, I don't know why I'm getting so mad right now.
SPEAKER_01We're up to oh, it's just like
[Ad] Box Score Brains : A Free Daily Baseball Podcast for Kids
SPEAKER_01no, but it is it's no, I got I got mad reading all this stuff about it too. Like, oh blah, blah, blah. Like people get mad about a roof. It's like, okay, are you mad about the baskets at Wrigley? Because
(Cont.) Brewers Babes #77 - Brewers are up 2-0
SPEAKER_01I'm fucking mad about that shit. Are you mad about the wind that comes off of Lake Michigan and blows balls back into the park? Are you mad about the green monster at Fenway? Do you want the umps to be like, oh, well, that would have been a home run? Right.
SPEAKER_00Should we just let the ball go into the ivy?
SPEAKER_01And if you can't dig it out, the runner just gets to keep going. Yep. What do you mean? Come on, every ballpark has its quirks. Like you said, that's that's one of the fun things about baseball. So, like, if you want to bitch about a roof, also, and I'm gonna be cocky about it because I've been doing this all season. If you want to fucking play in San Diego and not under a roof, maybe you should have won 103 games this season.
SPEAKER_00Well, they were like, this is the game winner for them, right? Ty France's home run would have put him ahead. Yeah, well, yeah. So I get it, I get the bitterness and the frustration over it, but the frustration should be that Ty France hit a pop-out. Like, that's your frustration because that call was not out at all, anyway. It just wasn't. Every every stat cast says so. And I've heard this argument, which I just want to address right now, which is yeah, stat cast prediction has 325, which is where the ball landed. So, of course, they're gonna predict that it's blah blah blah. And that's not the stat cast prediction. That's not the prediction model that they used at all. And like I was a math major for three semesters, and so uh this like it's calculus, right? It's calculus and physics, and the amount of people who suddenly are like physics experts. Experts, right? Right? Like, I'm not, it was three semesters, and I'm not gonna be like, I know how this works, blah blah blah blah blah. But I know enough to know what I don't know and to trust people who do know it. Yeah, you know, and so it's just it that's not the stat cast predictive model. They didn't use 325. Stop it. It would have been a pop-out. I think you have a legitimate critique that it was probably a foul ball. Yeah, he probably should have gotten another, yeah, another pitch. But maybe next year they'll put they'll paint like foul lines on the roof. Would that be fun? That's what they should do. Probably just put the foul lines right there. There you go, right on the roof. Hits there, foul line. So everybody was just so mad about it. And what did uh Pat Murphy say? He said that was just Bob Eucher's hand swatting it down.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that is what he said.
SPEAKER_00It's key, which is very sweet. I'll take that. Very sweet.
SPEAKER_01Hell yeah. Game one win. God was it stressful though. Jesus. It wasn't their best ball. The the series has not been their best series. No, it hasn't. I knew it was gonna be tough, and maybe just because I heard every single person in the world being like the Padres are the hottest team in baseball right now. The Padres are the hottest team. They've won 12 of their last 15 games. You know who else had won 12 of their last 15 games going into the fucking postseason? The fucking Milwaukee Brewers. Right. You know what I mean? The same record in September. Yeah, exactly.
SPEAKER_00It's the hottest team of baseball versus the best team of baseball, the hottest, like right, exactly.
SPEAKER_01That was the narrative. Okay, great. So, and then but watching that wild card series, first I was like, okay, I want to play the Cubs. Right. I want to be playing the Cubs and the DOS. They were awful, but the Padgers were just smashing home runs, dude. Like, I mean, game one, it was back to back. I mean, not quite back to back, but you know, tattoos on the first pitch and then Manny Machado, you know, two batters later. So I've going into it, I was nervous about what their offense was going to be able to produce. And I think that like the fact that we kept the ball in the yard is pretty great. I'm happy about that. But I wish that like I was waiting in both games, and we finally got one in the bottom of the ninth inning last night for one of those Brewer's big innings where we get like a walk and a hit by pitch and a stolen base and then a couple and then a blunt single and then whatever. I kept waiting for one of those magic innings where we just stack on a whole bunch of you know base runners and then bring them all across one at a time. And you know, we didn't win game one our way. We won it on the long ball, which is not our usual strategy or our technique or what we're capable of doing. So that also makes me nervous.
SPEAKER_00You're right. You're very right, though, in that we did hold them in a way that the Cubs couldn't, which is a nice thing. Because when I was watching that wildcard series, the first game, the first half of the game, I was like, oh yes, the Padres are dominating here. I love this. And then the second half of that game and the second game, I was like, I need the Cubs to do something because this needs to go three games, 14 innings. Yes, exactly. That's what I was thinking too. Oh, this cannot, you got you cannot roll over like this. So for the first time in my life, I feel like I was rooting a little bit for the Cubs. Our friend Terry did make another tattoo bet with a Padres fan. Oh boy. I don't know, I don't know what the tattoo is, but I feel like he should just stop.
SPEAKER_01He should just stop doing this. Hopefully, that friend is as nice as you are about what the outcome is. He's gonna have a whole sleeve dedicated to Cubs losses. Oh my gosh. I would never what a good sport he is.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's that's weird. So, but yeah, that we did hold them pretty well. They didn't dominate offensively. Our pitching definitely challenges them. For the national media saying that the Padres have the best bullpen in baseball, blah blah blah, the best bullpen in baseball. I was like, Did have but have you met Aaron Ashby? Yeah. Have you seen what Deal Hall can do? I don't think you have. I think when you say I think when you say the best bullpen in baseball, you're talking about Mason Miller and some some guys who are good sometimes.
SPEAKER_01Agreed.
SPEAKER_00And I just the narrative of it. This is why Pat Murphy has said before that we're the underdogs. It's not because we're the worst team. I think people get that confused. He's not saying that we are uh we are a worse team, that we are uh harder to win, you know. He's saying that people don't believe in the brewers or want to acknowledge them the way they want to acknowledge other teams, and that's what makes you the underdog.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, you're totally right about that. That's exactly what it is. And it's it's frustrating as a fan to experience it constantly, to hear about it constantly. Like we were talking about, I think it was before game one, it was like, oh, listening to this broadcast, I wouldn't even know who the Padres are playing today. Right, right. Like it's frustrating. I feel like that's what MLB wants.
SPEAKER_00They want a big payroll coastal team, you know. It's just, it's yeah. Is that why maybe they were the umps were so bad? This is my conspiracy theory that I said to you was like, there's no way in this year, 2026, where gambling is so prevalent and such a huge part of sports and baseball, MLB in particular, sanctioning gambling, yeah, that none of these umps haven't been offered a bribe.
SPEAKER_01We this isn't it. You've said it, we've talked about this multiple times over the last two or three years.
SPEAKER_00There's just no way, there's just no way that no ump in MLB has never been approached by somebody asking them to throw a certain game or make a certain call. Right. I don't I'm not I'm not accusing them of doing it, but I am saying I find it very, very hard to believe that they never would have been asked.
SPEAKER_01Well, I'll take it a step further and say that if you were to like, because you were like, are they would they be if someone knew about this, would they be legally would they be obligated to report it? I'm like, who they're gonna report it to? The people, the people in charge at MLB who want nothing more than another Yankees Dodgers World Series, the people who like would be the most upset over a Brewers World Series appearance, you think that they are the ones who would care.
SPEAKER_00You know what I'm saying? Yeah, but that's if if it was somebody who wanted the Padres to get the edge. But there you could have somebody who was wanting the Brewers to get an edge who asked an ump to make a call on behalf of the of Milwaukee. Um clearly it didn't happen in game two, but just in general, there's you you can't convince me that there's that's never happened. And I do want to know if somebody approaches an umpire and says, I will give you, you know, a hundred thousand dollars if you make this happen. What's the legal obligation of the ump to do that? Because there's there's just no way it hasn't happened. Maybe not on that scale.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_00But come on, there's just no way.
SPEAKER_01You're right. So I don't know. Legal sports gambling has just been like the worst. I mean, it's not good for anybody except for the the companies that run it, except for the bookies. Like it's those are the it's not good for anybody, it's bad for absolutely everyone. How many death threats do you think Mason Miller got since yesterday? No kidding. Seriously. Like, come on. Well, yeah. How many gambling addicts have killed themselves over right? Sorry, not to get dark, but it's just it's awful. It's bad, it's bad for everyone. It's bad for everyone.
SPEAKER_00So anyway, I'm not saying that they did it. Although, if they did take a bribe, it would certainly explain their performance better than them just being so terrible in game two.
SPEAKER_01Absolute dog shit in game two. I cannot believe it. I can't, I'm like I said, like I said earlier, 10 overturned ABS challenges. 10. That makes me so angry. Like, I you know me, I've been before the season started, I was like, I don't know about ABS. I'm not sure. I don't know how I'm gonna feel about it until I see it. And like first time I saw it, I was like, yes, this is the answer. I love it. I was tracking it every day. You sent me a you sent me a graph like two days ago, you know. But it should not be on the player to catch it this many times in one fucking game. Like it should be reserved for it's just not, it's ridiculous. 10. And those are only the ones that they challenge. Garrett Mitchell had two balls called strikes in game two, at least that he didn't challenge, you know. Some of our guys never do challenge, it's just it pisses me off. Yeah, yeah. 10 is it's not acceptable. How are you calling balls and strikes in a in a playoff game if you're that fucking bad?
SPEAKER_00And that's that strike zone was horrendous. And it was really bad. Not even the ones that are like that, but what about the ones that you can't challenge? Gavin cheats didn't go. Are you kidding me? Look, he went all the way around.
SPEAKER_01Are you kidding me? No, that was a swing and a miss, baby. I've said this before, I've said it to you, I've said it on the podcast. I could probably look at like 15 check swings in a row and like not be able to definitively tell you if he went or not. But that one was clear. That wasn't a check swing, that was a full-on swing. The hell full-on swing. And then Yeli, an inning later, getting called a swing when he checked it. I mean, I don't know if he checked it, but it certainly wasn't as wasn't as go around as sheets. It wasn't as it wasn't as far as sheets. No, I think he did Yelly did go, I think, at that one. But still, now you're gonna call it. Now you're gonna call it. Now you'll call it. Yeah, it's like ugh, it was awful. I was really mad. That game was frustrating.
SPEAKER_00I was supposed to go to that game. Oh yeah, you were homesick. I was very sick, but so Jamie took our daughter, which is you know, she's gonna remember this game forever. She came home and she's like, Mom, this is my best baseball memory.
SPEAKER_01Aww.
SPEAKER_00Like, yes, it is, because it's so exciting at the end there. But so I was watching it by myself, home alone, like huddled up on the couch in a robe. And and I was just getting more and more miserable watching it. Like, come on, you guys, please deliver something. First inning was just three ground outs for us, second inning, three K's in a row. Yeah, yep. Third inning, two ground outs and a strikeout. Yeah, so frustrating to watch. But then again, fifth inning, our captain gets the first hit of the game. Yep. And opens it up. Uh Henderson looked great. Henderson did he did fantastic. I really, really was very impressed with that. Yep.
SPEAKER_01And we had Rebe again, Ashby, McGill, all those guys, like knowing they're getting a day off. The pitching was was real good.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, the pitching was very good. The offense was not what it can be. Everybody was just a bundle of nerves.
SPEAKER_01I'm so frustrated at every at the end of every half inning. I was like, oh my god, can we get some fucking runs?
SPEAKER_00It was just it was so hard to watch. There was this discourse online about the fandom, too, because it was really quiet. And I texted Jamie and I said, Is it as quiet there as it is, as it sounds like it is here? And he said, Yes, everybody is on edge and very tense.
SPEAKER_01Well, I wondered if that was the case because you were texting about how quiet the crowd was. And in game one, it was like when Miz would like come set, it would get quiet in there. I was like, man, people are locked the fuck in. They are like on the edge of their seats waiting to watch every pitch, you know, which is something I haven't experienced a whole lot of. Usually it's just kind of noisy the whole time. So I don't know how that translated. It's or do you just feel like they were like less less enthusiastic or just nervous?
SPEAKER_00In my experience, especially in the postseason, what happens at Ampham is that when things are going well or when something good happens, the fans cheer the best. It's amazing. But if things are not going well, or if something bad happens, or something not ideal happens, the crowd just dies and it they don't start up again until something good happens.
SPEAKER_01So something good happens.
SPEAKER_00So they're not the ones creating the atmosphere, they're responding to the atmosphere.
SPEAKER_01Interesting.
SPEAKER_00And that I think is the frustrating part for me because what's the point of being the home team if you don't have your fans creating the atmosphere? Like, why are you being so quiet while Michael King is getting ready while he's doing come set? Why are you letting him have that like mental energy? Make him make it loud in his head, you know? And people are like, they're not playing well, we're not gonna cheer. Oh, okay. That's gonna be really helpful then. Right. It's really helpful. Come on. So I'm really glad that they woke up. You know what else I think? They have the rally towels. I think the rally towels are a bad idea. Really? You can't clap with a towel in your hand.
SPEAKER_01They need to give you uh some clappers. Oh, the little thunder sticks, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, the little tapies or a kazoo or something, or a cowbell or something like that. What's the Wisconsin sound?
SPEAKER_01I don't know. I was just trying to think. I guess a cowbell would work because we're the you know, dairy land.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, or everybody just has mooing. I don't know. I don't know.
SPEAKER_01They do that, they do that. That sounds like booing, though. Yeah, boo. Are you saying booing? I was saying mooers.
SPEAKER_00So I am glad. I also know that the ushers are always telling people to sit down. You don't because the ushers don't tell people to stop from like walking right in front of you during a pitch if they have to, you know, go get a hot dog or whatever. That's we've I've had this complaint before, I'll stop. I know.
SPEAKER_01All right, but let's talk about that ninth inning rally. Okay. So Yelly with a one-out walk, and then he's steal second base. And I was like, okay, here we fucking go. And then Sal walked, he had to do a fucking challenge, but he walked. And then and then they put in Andrew Vaughn, and like all game, I was like, why isn't Vaughn playing? Where is Vaughn? Why haven't I seen Vaughn? Why aren't we going to get Vaughn right now? And then um, and then he popped out. I was like, fuck. And then can we talk about Gary Sanchez and this fucking at bat dude? Oh my god, ball one, ball two, burned the last challenge on the third pitch. You know what I'm thinking? Gary's like, I don't fucking need another challenge. This is the last one I'm gonna need today. Don't care. Throwaway challenge, right? And then uh, and then a strike. Yeah, and then he ended up walking two more pitches. Like, just he was coming up there and they were talking about all of the postseason home runs that he's gotten with the Yankees, and like, oh, here's the big slugger, they're bringing the guy in, the bases are loaded, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. And I was like, don't be a hero, Gary, don't be a hero. And god damn it. So amazing. What a patient at bat! Like, incredible. Like, I've never loved Gary Sanchez more in my life. I laughed so hard when he did that challenge.
SPEAKER_00I was like, this is Gary's only A-B, and of course, he takes the challenge. Of course, he doesn't need it. He takes it and it's wrong, of course, but he redeemed himself. That was a very good A-B. Sal and Yelly's A B also were so, so good. I don't think they swung. I don't know how many pitches in a row of them just taking pitches like so good. Yep, so disciplined, so good. And Yelly's face. I have never seen Yelly that locked in before. It was a little scary how intense he was. And he delivered Cell so good. Gary Sanchez, oh man, El Gotti. Of course. I do think they should have put Vaughn in for Bowers in the eighth. Me too. That's when I would have put Vaughn in.
SPEAKER_01Bowers is not really struggled. Ugh, we didn't talk about how bad the defense was. We don't need to. Everyone saw it. Three errors was the what that tied for the most this season. Yeah. So the fact that we pulled off a win with three errors is like, oh, skip this out of your system now because we can't be fucking playing like this. Get it out now. Don't do it again. Bryce. Very uncharacteristic of Bryce. Not in the postseason. I guess so. All right, we'll get the jitters out. Let's go. Okay, but then bases are loaded, right? Jackson fucking Cherio. Fucking whiff on the first pitch. I was like, oh my god, I'm standing in my living room. I'm like, this, like this. I was laying on the couch like this. Also. I'm like, yeah, when he when he swung him a step for someone, I was like, oh god, oh god, like what are we doing? And then a ball, and then another whiff. And I was like, fuck. And my son was like, ask me what was going on. Cause I was all, and I was like, see this number? There's two strike, there's two outs, and there's two strikes. And and and then he uh he fouled the next one off. And my kid was like, is that a hit? And I was like, no, it's not a hit, it's a foul, but he can do that as many times as he wants. I was just like so stressed. I'm like, we need to get this number, it needs to get to three, and then it can go up to four, and then he can walk and run. Or you're explaining baseball to him, right?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, in the most stressful moment of my life.
SPEAKER_01I'm like, no, here's the box where he has to throw the ball in. Now shut the fuck up, please. Mommy's trying to watch baseball.
SPEAKER_00And then boom. Okay, let's talk about him taking that. What was it? A slider. He laid off that. And I'm just like, I don't understand how you do that because you just saw four pitches in a row that were above a hundred, and then you see this slider and you just you take it. Beautiful, incredible. This the discipline of this kid.
SPEAKER_01Yes. So if you uh was going around interviewing the guys afterwards, and they were like, at least two of them said, I knew he was gonna get a hit. When he laid off that slider, I knew I knew he was getting a hit. They all knew. I I feel like I knew it like deep in my soul.
SPEAKER_00You could just tell sometimes when he gets up to the plate, and I think we talked about this in the last couple of things, but sometimes you can just tell when Jackson Curio is going to make a moment, but the jitteriness of being a Milwaukee fan in the postseason was superseding my belief in that moment, and I was ready to be disappointed.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00So when he hit that Niger Morgan-esque walk-off single, yes, I was sick as a I am I was so sick, like delirious. But I jumped up on my couch and then I started jumping up and down and screaming at the top of my lungs, like a ridiculous person. And then I laid down on the floor and cried. Pulling that playing it out like that was necessary. I didn't this wasn't a must-win game, but if we hadn't won it, I don't think going to San Diego would have been very good.
SPEAKER_01God, it just feels like a weight lifted knowing like we got three more games and we only got to win one of them. Like that just it feels better than going out there for two. God, yeah, man, I lost my fucking mind. I was like I said, I was standing there like dead silent, like totally just like stiff in my living room. And then like I lost my fucking mind. I was jumping up and down and screaming and screaming, and my kids were like, Oh my god, are you okay? Yelly had an at-bat earlier. I was dying my daughter's hair, and uh I said, if Yelly gets a home run right now, I'll drop dead. And she goes, Well, I hope he doesn't. I was like, I'll die right now. Oh my god, incredible! Like, I just saw a video that someone made where they they put Bob Eucher's call of Niger Morgan's hit in 2011. Really? Uh yeah, the audio over Jackson Cherio's uh walk-off hit yesterday. It was amazing. I'll find it and send it to you. It was really amazing. It had the two videos side by side because it looked this it looked so the same.
SPEAKER_00They do, they looked really similar, yeah. And Nigel Morgan threw the opening pitch that game.
SPEAKER_01Oh my god, I love baseball so much.
SPEAKER_00I know that he was throwing the first pitch, man. You know, man. He also was at the game when Mike Mustake hit a very similar walk-off single in 2018.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. Well, Nigel Morgan needs to start coming to all these games. Please come back. Yeah, come back, T Flesh. Yeah, God, and then man, watching the celebration afterwards, obviously. You saw that video of Contreras telling Sal to slide he like got down on the ground.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, beating the ground like this, like and yelly tackling Sal. Yep. And then did you see the one after of like everybody walking towards the dugout, but Garrett Mitchell going to be like a big thing?
SPEAKER_01Garrett Mitchell ran out to give a little big hug.
SPEAKER_00Yes, yes. I was like, you know what? If any the best person on that team to get a hug from is probably Garrett Mitchell. That those are probably the most genuine hugs. You know how some people are just really they give you really good hugs.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00That's the guy. You need a hug from a from a Milwaukee brewer. You're gonna go to either Garrett Mitchell or to Aaron Ashby, I think.
SPEAKER_01Oh, I bet Aaron Ashby gives good hugs. Those are the two guys you're gonna get really good hugs from. You'll be like you've thought this through. I'm like, who would I would I who would I want to hug?
SPEAKER_00Who would give me a good hug?
SPEAKER_01Let's try them out.
SPEAKER_00I'll let you know. Everybody light up. You know, I think Freddie would have given a really good hug too. I bet. And Willie. Oh, undoubtedly. It wouldn't even be a question. Yeah. But right now, that that hug, I was just like, oh, that's so sweet, Garrett. Going to find Sal. Sal, you know what? If Sal hadn't clipped that corner at third the way he did to run those bases, that would have gone into extras. Sal's base running ability there was part of winning that game. And after the game, he was asked about it, and he said, Yeah, that was really important for me to do that. And I was taught it by Christian Yelit, who was an amazing bass runner that never gets credit for being an amazing base runner. But I was like, Yes, of course, your Captain Yeli walked you through how to do this. Yeah. And like has helped you how to do this because it was one of those things where when you know what you're looking at, you just can appreciate how beautiful it was. And the slide in. Oh, I loved it so much.
SPEAKER_01Amazing. I don't know what else to say, but I'm glad I was like, we gotta record. Like, we should do it on Monday, you know, on the off day. And I'm like, man, I hope we have like good things to talk about. And holy shit, I mean, what too stressful, maybe a little bit frustrating games, but Jesus, full of fucking drama.
SPEAKER_00Yes, absolutely. And I think the thing to remember is that the team was not playing their best ball and still won these two games against the quote hottest team in baseball. And so if we can count on them to bring their a game, I cannot wait. I can't wait to see what it gets us. I'm very excited about it. The only thing I will say as a as a caveat to this is thinking about last season, thinking about what happened with the Cubs. We did win the first two games at home.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And they were not as close and they were not as tight. The Cubs played those games like they played the games against the Padres this year. But then we lost two in Wrigley, and that was ugly. And Wrigley is loud, and Petco is loud. It definitely got into it got into Freddie's head for sure last year. And then we came back and we won game five here. So I'm not gonna be disappointed if we don't win either game in San Diego. I would like to, obviously. That was not my preference. That would be my preference, but I'm not gonna psych myself out and be like, oh, the Brewers can't do it now because they're on a two-game losing streak and blah blah blah. I'm not gonna be that type of fan.
SPEAKER_01Well, we'll see. I'm excited. I'm real excited. I gotta stay up so late. Those games are so fucking late. I'm gonna do it though. Oh my gosh, tomorrow's game starts at 8:30. 9.30 for me for you. And then Wednesday, if there's a if there's a game for it, starts at 10.
SPEAKER_00It starts at 10.
SPEAKER_01I'm supposed to be asleep at 10. I'll do it though.
SPEAKER_00Ampham is having a a watch party outside of their like UW credit union patio or whatever they call it.
SPEAKER_01I thought about going out, but I'm like, I can't go out at 10 p.m. on a fucking Tuesday night. Give me a break. What were you doing at 22?
SPEAKER_0022.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, definitely out at 10 p.m. on a Tuesday when it's 22.
SPEAKER_00It's when you start.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Not anymore.
SPEAKER_00Nope. You know what we didn't talk about, actually, going back to this, is was Mason Miller tipping his pitches?
SPEAKER_01And if so, right, was self-signaling. I did hear about that. My initial gut reaction was to be mad that, like, of course, we're in game one, we're gonna blame the roof for why the Padres didn't fucking win. And in game two, we're gonna instead of giving credit to some great at bats and a clutch hit, we're gonna say that Miller was tipping his pitches. That's that's where I went, like, immediately. In your heart, yes, in my heart. Like, can we just give the brewers credit for winning these games?
SPEAKER_00Well, I think you can do both because I think he absolutely was tipping his pitch. It's also part of the game, like it's part of it's part of playing baseball. Being a baseball player at this level means that part of your job is to identify what pitch is coming however you can, and to relay that information to your teammates however you can. Like that is also what makes a good team. The Brewers have been doing it all year and they haven't been shy about it. That's part of how they're winning games. And I don't think, you know, you still gotta swing the bat and hit the ball, even if you know what's coming.
SPEAKER_01Definitely.
SPEAKER_00So I don't think it takes anything away from from Jackson's uh A B. And I don't think it takes anything away from the game. And it also feels like you know what, Devin Williams was tipping his pitches.
SPEAKER_01I was just gonna say, when the roles are reversed, and I think about Devin Williams tipping his pitches against the Mets, it was Devin Williams' fucking fault. There was no, you know, no, no discredit to the to fucking Pete Alonso for hitting that home run. You know, he still had to make contact. You're right, he still had to hit it hard, he still had to fucking hit it out of the park for it to work. And the person I'm mad at, okay, I'm a little mad at Pete Alonso, but the person I'm really mad at still is Devin Williams. You're so mad at Devin Williams. God, I'll never forgive him.
SPEAKER_00Um, yeah, sorry. And then I mean, that's also a management call. Like Mason Mill's never, never gone for six outs. Right, exactly. I think if it was, I don't know, it makes sense that he's your guy, he's been your guy all season, so of course you're gonna keep him in and try to see what he can do. But you got bases loaded and you got Jackson Curio come up. I would have at least, you know, gone to the mound and threatened him a little bit with something. Right, right, right, right. So I don't know. I think, yeah, maybe he was tipping his pitches. Yeah, maybe Sal was relaying the pitch, and it's just part of the game. It's part of the game. Yeah. We've had it happen to us, you've had it happen to you, your team has done it. It's not like anybody's banging a trash can.
SPEAKER_01Uh, let's just give a quick update on the other series. The Dodgers and the Braves are tied one apiece. Yes. The White Sox and the Guardians, the White Sox are up to two to nothing. So they only got one more.
SPEAKER_00I love the White Sox.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I'm psyched about that. And this is cool because they were battling for the division at the very end of September, and now they're out here playing each other again, which I think is pretty fucking cool.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that's a good rivalry. And I really, really like the White Sox the way they're celebrating. Murakami is all of a sudden a super celebrity.
SPEAKER_01I know. I've been I've been liking him all season long.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's been really wonderful to watch them. Although, you see, Tommy Fam, he's like, I talked to Rob Manfred about why my ball wasn't a homer. He said he he hit a ball. I was like, got caught. And he's like, I hit a ball just like that uh last month and it was a homer. Why isn't this one a homer? Also, something's wrong with the balls. They're juicing them. I'm gonna go talk to Rob Manfred about it. And I was like, Tommy fam, I am so glad you're not on my team, but I fucking I love you for your absurdity. That's you're so you're so weird.
SPEAKER_01I was just talking to I was just talking to somebody about Manny Machado because of all the booze that he gets because um he stepped on Jesus Aguilar's foot like eight years ago. And it's like, I get it. Like he's a he's a guy you love to hate. But I don't hate him because like you gotta have guys like that. You need plus he's a really fucking good baseball player, right? But uh, you know, you gotta have I like the the Wilson Contreras's and the Tommy Fams and the Manny Machados, like the those kind of like asshole characters who are, you know, you love to hate them because of how cocky and whatever they are. It's fine. You you gotta have some guys like that in the game. I have picked Manny Machado to be my fielder's choice winner in the past. I remember. Let me tell you about his character arc. Yeah, that's true.
SPEAKER_00He has, and I think every person is worth redemption. And look, this might be a controversial thing to say, but if fans can forgive Josh Hayter so quickly for using really terrible, racist, and homophobic slurs when he was 18 and 19, and now is like what late 20s or something, because we recognize that he's grown and is a different person now, then we can do the same thing for Manny Machado. I still hate him for his baseball prowess. It's so good, and I hate that. I also don't understand this blonde thing he's got going on.
SPEAKER_01What I did not understand that either. I was like, dude, why did your hair look like that? I was like, you are too old to be in your little fuckboy era right here. Way too old.
SPEAKER_00You can't do this. Yeah. I know what it is.
SPEAKER_01Also, the baggy uniform. Look, let's talk. Speaking of why we need to like Manny Machado, let's talk about all the things that I hate about him.
SPEAKER_00Look, you just stop it, Manny Machado. I know what you're doing. It would be like me parting my hair in the middle. I'm not gonna do it. No, not gonna do it either. Stop. I'd be I'd be glad when his season is over. Like, I'm done. No, yeah, but Tommy Cam, keep it going, baby. So dumb.
SPEAKER_01Uh and then the rays and the Yankees are playing right now. In case you were wondering, Freddie Peralta is doing okay. He had a nine up, nine down. He did. Yeah. And then he gave up uh two hits, which resulted Oh, he gave up a home run.
SPEAKER_00That sounds like a Freddie outing.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Like nothing actually new there. That's what he does.
SPEAKER_01So that series, the Razor Up on the Yankees, one to nothing as of the time of us recording this, but by the time this airs, we'll know what the actual situation is. So don't be mad that this isn't up to the minute coverage of the Rays and Yankees series.
SPEAKER_00Freddie has done so well since becoming a Ray. I think New York was just fucking bad for him. You know what he said? They he did an interview. I forget with who what I remember is he's saying like the energy here in Florida is better. I like the way they play the game better, they're nicer to me here. Yeah. They didn't put everything on my shoulders. He said, like, the pitching staff has worked with him to figure stuff out. It's like, yeah, the Mets, you can tell that nobody is friends in the locker room or anything. So I'm really glad that he's I wouldn't mind seeing him come back to Milwaukee for the World Series. Me either. I'm not gonna boo him, but right he already came back and he got he got his standing ovation when he was a Met. So we don't have to do that here. But yeah, do you have any predictions for how the rest of this series is gonna go?
SPEAKER_01Uh I don't know. I know what I want. I'd like the Rays and the White Sox to advance. And I want the Braves to beat the Dodgers. That's what I want to happen, and I feel like it's possible. You and everybody else in the nation. All right. Let's get into our Brewers Babes Sausage Race Championship update. So if you are a longtime listener, you know that this is an annual project that Lisa mostly runs, but that we put together where we seed a bracket of starters, relievers, infielders, and outfielders. And then based on whatever criteria you like or we like, we then put the players against each other and eventually come up with our annual sausage race winners. So the bracket was put together recently, and we have been running polls on Instagram to find out who your winners are in these different rounds. Do you want to give us an update on who where we are? Right now we're at a Suite 16.
SPEAKER_00And so uh I think there's not really any surprises coming right now, but there might be some surprises or some hard choices for people to make. So we have here's who here's who's up, uh, Ms. V. Harrison, Gasser, and Henderson, Churiolara, Yelly Mitchell, Yuri Be Hall, Ashby McGill, Conturis, Ortiz, Trang, V. Bowers. But the interesting thing is we don't, there's no criteria that's standard. So everybody can just do whatever they want.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I was thinking maybe a good one to incorporate this year, like we talked about earlier, is who would give the best hugs. Uh, there you go. You could base it on, you could add that to your criteria.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and we have the entire we have a blank bracket on Instagram and on Twitter, so you can go and print it out yourself. Uh, do whatever you want with it. Send it to us. We like to see your brackets when we have when they send us brackets, y'all. It's pretty great. It's fun. Put their notes on there too. Yeah. Yeah. Tell us your criteria. Last year we had a couple who are just hair.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_00Best hair.
SPEAKER_01Um, that's my go-to.
SPEAKER_00I noticed.
SPEAKER_01Jackson Cheerio got a lot of points. His hair looked awesome this weekend. Yes. Mine is obviously thighs. Thighs.
SPEAKER_00I like arms. But you know, you know, it's it's whatever you want. So it's really fun and silly. I don't even know why we started doing it. It was your idea to start it, I think. But I don't know why.
SPEAKER_01Way back, way back in the earliest. I said, we were talking about guys at the bullpen, and I said, hey, we were probably talking about Brent Sooner. I'm like, we should rank the bullpen by hotness. That would just be a fun thing for me and you to do sometime while we're sitting around. I mean, you were like, hold on. Let me get in a let me get on an Excel spreadsheet here. And it turned into this. That was right.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_01But yeah, we Lisa and I each do our own and we share those at the end. And then you guys, the listeners and the people who follow us on our social media vote, and you decide the listener sausage race winner as well. So we'll be updating you on that throughout the rest of the postseason.
SPEAKER_00The closest race so far um has been there's been two really close ones. There's been Ortiz versus Pratt.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_00That one was very close. Joey O won out that one. And then the other really close one was Lara versus Sal.
SPEAKER_01I could see that. That one was tough. That's yeah, it is tough. I haven't done mine yet.
SPEAKER_00So and sometimes a postseason game will change this. So I try not to post it right after a game because people's performance in the games do you know change.
SPEAKER_01Well, that happened when we put up the poll for who was gonna be resident cutie because we happened to post it like the day that Lara hit that walk-off, and then it was like, okay, sorry, Gary Mitchell, like there's no way in hell you're resident cutie now.
SPEAKER_00I think Lara was the right choice anyway. Come on. Sorry, yeah. So um go on our Instagram, it's at brewers underscore babes, and go on our stories and vote, and then on Twitter at Brewers Babes. You can also vote. Some of you are probably voting more than one stacking the deck. That's fine. There's no this this means nothing.
SPEAKER_01It's allowed.
SPEAKER_00It's like stealing signs is allowed. This is allowed too. There's no, there's nothing. This is the nothing thing. It's just fun and dumb. So go do it. It's fine. Yeah. All right. Did you wait? Did you uh fill yours out yet?
SPEAKER_01No, I haven't. Me neither.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_01No, I'm gonna do it. Great. I will. I'm gonna do it throughout as we watch more games.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_01All right. Well, that takes us into next week's lineup. The Brewers lead the Padres two to nothing in the division series. They'll play game three in San Diego on Tuesday night with Dustin May scheduled to get the start. And if game four is needed, that'll be Wednesday night. And game five is scheduled for Friday afternoon in Milwaukee.
SPEAKER_00Yes, unless the Dodgers are done, unless that series is already decided, then it'll be a seven o'clock game. Oh.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_00Alright, well, you know, now you know. I think, well, that about wraps it up. So uh please take a minute after you listen to this to give us a rating on Apple or Spotify or wherever you listen. And we'd also be delighted if you could share our show with a friend who is as big of a Brewers fan or a baseball fan as you are. Um, we will be back probably before a few weeks, I imagine. We'll be recording sooner rather than later. But until then, you can find us on Twitter and Blue Sky at Brewers Babes and on Instagram at Brewers underscore babes. Bye babes. Bye babes.
SPEAKER_02I kept in my billet.
