Welcome back to another episode of Brewers Babes, a Milwaukee Brewers and Baseball fan podcast for Babes by Babes. I'm Aaron. I'm Lisa. As we all know, the Brewers eliminated the Padres from the postseason after four games of the NLDS in advance to the NLCS, where they've just taken the first two games of the series from the Dodgers. Feels fucking great.
unknownYes.
SPEAKER_01I want to talk all about that. But before we do that, can we talk about that game four win over the Padres?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, let's get into that win. Are we just gonna skip game three then? Yeah, might as well.
SPEAKER_01We can talk about it. The thing was like, oh my god, they were so late. I stayed up until what 1.30 in the morning watching game three, just like to watch that loss. And I was like, this is the worst.
SPEAKER_00Because you're on the East Coast. For those who don't know, Aaron is on the East Coast.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so that game started at 9.30, I think. And then the next night it started at 10. And I was like, I'm not gonna not watch the whole game. Like after watching Jackson Cheerio get that walk-off in the ninth in game two, I'm like, there's no fucking way I'm gonna turn off any of these games early. Uh when I started watching game four, I was so mad.
SPEAKER_00Because you were tired, yeah, like cranky.
SPEAKER_01I'm like, I don't want to watch this again. I don't want to see this again. I don't want to see them loading at the bases and leaving them loaded.
SPEAKER_00I don't want any more like game four looked great. Like I was advocating early on for Gaster to be our game three starter, and I still remember that. He should have been, but he game four was phenomenal for him. He looked so good, and it made me so happy. You know, he's had an ERA under 1.8 in the last seven stars he's had. Wow. So that's amazing. I feel great. He's firing, he's fantastic. No complaints about Robert Gaster's performance at all. He did give up that Homer to Tatis, but you know whose fault that is? It's my fault because at Tatis's first or second A B, I looked at Jamie and I said, I think he might be due. It's my fault. It's not Robert Gaster's fault. That one is on me. Yeah. Jamie looked at me like I had eight heads all of a sudden. Like he scooched farther away from me.
SPEAKER_01I want to talk about jinxes and stuff later. Like how to undo bad baseball juju later. But that's so funny. You know, I wasn't mad. I mean, obviously I was mad, but I was also like, whatever, you gave up a home run to Tati. That's not a it happens. Yep. It happens. And also, like, I really love him as a player. And I I like watching him hit home runs. Like, I didn't particularly love watching him hit that one, but I I like to watch him trot around the bases.
SPEAKER_00This is what I said about the Padres. I was texting to a friend and I was like, I don't hate the Padres. I really actually very much like the Padres. I like Tatis. I even like Machado. I do. I've talked about it before. And Ethan Salas has like he's won my heart. This kid is gonna be a superstar. He's so sweet. I adore him. I want the best for them, just not this year. Not this series. Let us beat you. You know who else I love is Samad Taylor.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. I just think he's so cute and fun. I think he's so fun to watch. Big fan.
SPEAKER_00He got iced out though. He at his A B when he came into pinch, right? And his A B, he was just standing there, struck out, and just stood there for like an extra 15 seconds. I was like, is he gonna move? You know what I else I loved about game four, Iron? Is well, okay, let's talk about game three because it sucked. Cooper Pratt had that error, did cost him the game, but it was broken back coming right at him. Bogurus did that weird little leg lift thing to kind of throw him off. Then Cooper rushed the throw. Then Bowers, I mean it was a hard pick, but he didn't make it. He at least has to knock it down to stop the run, and he couldn't do that. So that felt bad. Bowers was 0 for 4, Garrett was 0 for 4, right? But then in between game three and four, Merv got a little talk. They got a talk, right? They had a talking to. I don't remember specifically, but I think Mitchell just said, yeah, Murph told us just play how you got here. That's right. That's what it was. And then they did in game four.
SPEAKER_01A two-hit game from Mitchell, including an RBI and a triple. I was like, they're back. And then yeah, Bauer gets on base four times. What? He's maybe not hitting it like, you know, he didn't come back and smash a triple like Garrett Mitchell did, but man, the quality of at-bats just skyrocketed. And I know we're gonna talk about Jake Bowers in an at bat later. Yes. But being patient at the plate, making them work, and then getting on base, taking so many walks. I'll take it. Fuck yeah.
SPEAKER_00This is the Jake Bowers we've been seeing all year. His A Bs, people are seeing it nationally now. They're like, wow, that was a great A B. No, it was one in a series of fantastic A Bs. Absolutely. Oh my god. Absolutely. Remember that series against the Braves when was there was like 33 pitches in the first two innings and Jacob Bowers had half of them? Yeah. Incredible.
SPEAKER_01And then of course, the story of game four is Manny Machado hitting that almost home run and getting robbed. My favorite part is that he hit the ball, he watched it, and then he blew a bubble with his bubblegum. And I was like, fuck, it's gone. Manny Machado's blowing a bubble and watching it. I'm like, it's gone. And then Garrett fucking Mitchell, dude, again with that catch. I lost my goddamn mind. I'm sure everyone did. I could not believe it. And then they asked everybody afterwards, what did you think? And every single brewer was like, thought it was gone. I knew it was gone. I was pretty sure it was gone. And then Manning goes, I should have hit it harder. I love that from him. Yes.
SPEAKER_00He should have hit it hard. Yep. That's the right answer. Should have hit it harder. Love it. It was so fun. And Garrett didn't even, I mean, he's fast. He gets to those balls. I think anybody in our outfield could have gotten to that, but like Lara could have gotten to it for sure. But he made it look so easy and he didn't even have to reach that high. Now, if you're the fan behind him, what do you spend the rest of your life thinking about? You know, how do you not replay that moment over and over and over in your head every day till you die?
SPEAKER_01Oh my god, what a wild DS, the series of it, because the night before there was a fan interference in the Yankees game. Was there? Yeah, Volpe was gonna hit a two-run game tying home run, and a fan reached over and grabbed it, and um, it ended up being a double. There were two fucking roof shots in the DS, and then there were I mean, there was no fan interference in the Padres with Mitchell's catch, but there could have been.
SPEAKER_00I heard it wasn't even gonna go over the wall. I I can't really tell, but it would have been a blow, even if it was a double. I love the um there's one clip where it's just a shot of Manny. You can't see Mitchell catching it, you can just see Manny blowing the bubble and then walking, and then just oh, it gets dejected, then goes and beats his helmet in the dugout. I get it.
SPEAKER_01It's like that uh that Simpsons where Lisa goes with Ralph to the Krusty show and she says, I've never liked you, I don't like you. And Bart says, Look, you can actually pinpoint the second where his heart rips in half. That's me and Machetto taking his helmet off.
SPEAKER_00Oh amazing. And then and then Trevor McGill. Oh, McGill with the save again. Axel, blade, blade, whatever we want to call him, madman. My favorite psycho. That dude is crazy. Yeah. I loved the celebration at the end. Did you see where he just like runs out and then grabs a card? It's like, I found more beer, boys. What a psycho. What a psycho, dude.
SPEAKER_01Love it. Fucking love it.
SPEAKER_00Uh I saw something on I don't know, somewhere on social media that's like, Trevor McGill is the guy you want at the grill at the barbecue. You know he's not gonna fuck it up just based on that thing where he's like, I found more beer. You know, like that's the guy. That's the guy at the grill. Absolutely loved it. Trevor McGrill. Trevor McGrill. Oh man, amazing. Amazing to not go to game five for the DS. That was everything. To come home with crazy momentum, and then let's talk, let's talk about game one. Okay. So we went to this game, and the thing that I have been worried about or concerned about all postseason, just like last postseason, was the energy of the crowd. Because when the Brews are doing well, the crowd is the best crowd in baseball. And when something goes wrong, it it just gets silent, typically, right? There's just nerves, there's a bundle of energy. There was none of that at game one. It was the best postseason crowd I've ever been a part of. It was non-stop noise, nonstop humming, even during some rough moments, you know, like Ms, a couple of full counts. Instead of getting quiet, people got loud. Like Miz is on a full count, and people are cheering him and psyching out Tarek Scuble. I don't know if you could hear it in the broadcast, but there was Scooba. We learned our lesson from Cubs fans last year, psyching out Freddie Peralta, and it was really fun to be a part of.
SPEAKER_01Well, I could tell it was I mean, it sounded different on the on the TV broadcast than others had. And then um, first thing Scooba did was won a new pitchcom, and I was like, So when our guys do it, I'm like, get this man some new equipment. It's not working properly. And then when they do it, I'm like, he's fucking lying, he's trying to use a free mount visit. But for for the rest of his entire start, he kept having to put his glove up to his hat because he couldn't hear. He was so fucking loud in there. It was awesome. So man, they really got they got to him. You know, the Dodgers were just like trotting him out to be like, look, this is the guy that you were supposed to get, and you didn't get and we got because we got everybody. So let's see how you do with this. And bam, we did it. Psyched him out, psyched him out. Even though Miz didn't have his best game, the offense psyched him out, and the defense was great. I feel like Bryce Tarang getting that ground ball and getting the the out first out in the first inning, like set the tone for how how intense of a game it was gonna be and how how great they were gonna be. He went running across, right? There were three double plays in that game. I mean, keeping the ball in the yard again, like they did in the Padre series, and just playing incredible defense.
SPEAKER_00You're so right about that first Bryce Tarang play that I don't think actually got enough credit because it got overshadowed by all the other great stuff that happened in that game. But that was an impossible play. Yeah, I know. It was an impossible. He went like from his backside and made this perfect turn and a perfect throw. Like, you don't see infielders making plays like that very often. That's a hard play for Bryce Tarang to make.
SPEAKER_01When I saw the ball hit, I was like, there's no fucking way he has that. There's no way, even if he can get it, there's no way he's getting out. I couldn't believe it. And that was the first inning, like, just brilliant work. Right.
SPEAKER_00You're so right. It was lights out. Oh Mookie bets, four or three. Just looking at the scorebook now. Amazing. So good. And yeah, those double plays, one to end the first, one to end the second, and one to end the fifth. Some of them were routine, but that second double play.
SPEAKER_01Was it the most beautiful double play you've ever seen in your life? Five, six, three.
SPEAKER_00Whatever, box announcers. It might have been close. It was pretty close to the most beautiful double play I've ever seen. But yes, the defense in that game was lights out, spot on, which was nice because we'd been seeing not great defense in the Padre series. So to see that they had it against the Dodgers. It wasn't great in game two, but against the Dodgers in game one, fucking everything.
SPEAKER_01How about this? Should we talk about the this Bach controversy? Ugh, okay.
SPEAKER_00Look, you've done so much research on Baching. I feel like I feel like one of your goals in your baseball fandom is to get to the bottom of box.
SPEAKER_01So you tell me. Y'all could all go back and listen to what the balk. Yeah, that's it. Which was like our fifth episode ever, maybe. That looked he stepped off. He's okay.
SPEAKER_00Well, he used his back foot to step off first, we thought, until you went back and saw a tiny little twitch in his knee. And that was the buck beforehand. I guess that was the buck. They never really clarified because the other thing that I saw was he tried to throw to second instead of first. Like had a little hesitation between second and first, and then that was the buck. Like, but the runner was in between first and second. So I don't know. Box. What I do know is that if that was the buck, then Alex Vesia definitely had a buck. And later on.
SPEAKER_01And I think that that's the thing that makes it controversial. And that's the thing that makes me angry. Because we saw the same thing with a check swing call in the Padres series with Gavin Sheets and Christian Yelich, both of them going around and only one of them getting called for it. If Miz balked, then so did Vesia. Like it's gotta be consistent. And in those situations, I get really angry because I feel like the brewers have to win in spite of we don't just have to beat the Padres or the Dodgers, we have to beat the fucking umps too. Like it feels it just feels so stacked, you know, and it pisses me off because I'm like, what else do we have to do? Like we already we love to brag about all these other disadvantages that we're at, you know. Love to brag about just you know what I'm saying. Small market, little payroll, just blah blah blah. And then, like, on top of it, like we're getting these bullshit calls. At least keep it consistent. Come on, right. And he picked him off, and then they gave him second base, he was out at first. That's what pissed me off.
SPEAKER_00For sure he was. Was that the one that Pat came out and started yelling at?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I got real worried. I was like, well, sit down, Pat.
SPEAKER_00Like, don't get thrown out. I didn't have a great angle, I could see the back of the ump's head from that, so I couldn't see what was actually happening, but I'm assuming it wasn't one of those situations where Pat calls an ump a little bitch.
SPEAKER_01No, he just said, you know, that's wrong. He was like, That's so wrong. You know that's wrong. Yeah, anyway. So that was the Bach thing, and then no one's clear on what that rule is, anyway. So it's it's frustrating to see it. Anyway, let's see what else happened. Bryce Tarang had a fucking this home run, dude. Oh, beautiful. It was one of three lefty on lefty opposite field home runs on an inside pitch of the whole fucking season. It was one of three, and the only other two were Otani, right? So Bryce Otani saw and was like, I thought that I did those. Yeah, but Bryce Tarang, he was at the park after hours in the batting cages every day until like midnight, working on his swing. He was talking about what wasn't working was the angle that it comes into the box. Like his bat wasn't coming in at the right angle. And like, just read I read this whole article in The Athletic about it, and it's such a a good example of like the kind of player that he is and always has been. Yes, the dude has a shitload of talent, but we were talking about how hard William Contreras works. I think Bryce Tarang might be one of the hardest working guys because he identifies an issue and he will fucking work on it until he fixes it. He stays in the game because he puts in the work.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, he and Contreras were out there doing BP together. It was really beautiful to see, and he credited Vogue too. Like Vogue's out there with him. Yep. Like that's so cool.
SPEAKER_01And he always he always talks about his family, he always talks about his mom, and he always talks about his sisters. Any interview where they ask him who's the best athlete in your family, he's always like, I'm the worst. Like my sisters are way better athletes than me. Like they motivate me, they keep me going. Every time he he's so humble about how hard he works. And he's always he's got that air about him too. You know, he's very he's quiet, he's he's he's humble and he's a hard

SPEAKER_01fucking worker.
SPEAKER_00You can see the difference too. They had the ump cam, which I'm not like a huge fan of, but I do appreciate it for some stuff. In the Dodgers series,
(Cont.) Brewers Babes #78 - Let's Play Some Baseball!
SPEAKER_00you can see, well, in the Padre series, he just he looked so tight and so tense, and his elbow was up in the front, and he just looked very like coiled. I'm like, you have to unspring a little bit. And then when you look at the ump cam from the Dodgers series where he hit that home run, which you can see is something that as little league coaches, right, we're trying to teach our kids, which is treat the knob of your bat like a flashlight, pointing at the ball. And like you can see, like that's what he does. His movement kind of changes. You can't see this if you're just listening, but I'm being very animated. But that's what it's like. It's like he he was going like this, his elbow was up a little bit because of it, and then he dropped his elbow and pointed his knob like a flashlight, and then boom, and that gets a good cue. It's a really smart angle, and it just meant everything that he was working that way to make that happen. And he's been lights out. Everybody said, What do you need in the postseason? You need Bryce Turing to come to life. Okay, got it. He's he's here.
SPEAKER_01And I feel like, you know, we've been waiting on Yelly to get a significant hit. And this is all the announcers wanted to talk about too in the beginning of the NLCS. So, like Bryce Turang hasn't had a postseason hit in blah blah blah. Christian Yelich hasn't had a postseason RBI since blah blah blah. Like they love to pile on, they love to share all these stats about how ineffective our offense has been, you know, and so you can see how Yeli is hitting more consistently, more confidently. It's like he needed that one. And now it's it's like it's blown it open. We got that over with, and now we can now we can fucking move forward. The only person that still needs to do it is Joey Ortiz. He'll get there.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_01But talk about a beautiful swing. How about Luis Lara's go-ahead single? I've watched that in slow motion five million times.
SPEAKER_00So good. You know what the best part of that was for me is I had heard people in national media after the game say how surprised they were that he got a hit. I heard a bunch of people say we he's in the lineup to get give some solid defense because he's great out in the outfield, but you they're not gonna expect him to produce with the plate. But like, what the f listen, you all have to stop saying things that come straight from your asshole. Like you have to stop. I get, I think it's a natural assumption, right? Because Luis is a switch hitter. So I get that you're gonna say that as an overall baseball move, as like an overall baseball announcer or somebody who follows the sport generally, that that makes sense, that he's in the lineup for this reason for strong defense. But this is the NLCS. There's absolutely no reason at all for every announcer and person in the press box to not be intimately familiar with who this team is at this point. You are totally right. You're absolutely right about that. What's wrong with you all? Of course, they expect him to produce have you met Pat Murphy? You think Pat Murphy has a player out there who he doesn't expect to produce at the plate? What's wrong with you?
SPEAKER_01What's wrong with you? No, we talk about David Hamilton in a little bit. Oh, yeah, let's speak up, right? Yeah. If we want to go on to game two, boy, he had how many hits? Two at least, maybe three. Did he have three hits?
SPEAKER_00One, he got hit by a pitch. He had two hits, definitely two hits, and then a hit by pitch. Great at bats. And then he had two stolen bases. What a ballsy, ballsy move those were.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. So yeah, game two, we got Henderson versus Yamamoto, which I would have loved to see Henderson versus Scoobyl just because of all of that conversation. But, you know, it's fine. Again, the announcers, they just wanted to talk about like this is the guy. We know exactly what we're getting. And then they were going on, they were going on and on about like, he hasn't missed a start since the World Baseball Classic. You know, he's been out there every week, blah, blah, blah. The only thing that I find funny about that is that the Dodgers have so many starting pitchers that they literally have like a rotation of people that can play at different times of the year. So the reason that Yamamoto didn't miss a start is because he's the only guy who didn't take a few weeks off while they let some other guys come in. You know, there was like a rotation where people that were playing in the middle of the summer weren't the same people who were playing in April. I mean, Blake Snell's back now. All these guys get these long breaks because they have eight fucking pitchers. Right. So rotation A and rotation B. For them to go on and on, Yamamoto hasn't missed a start since neither has fucking Miz. You know what I'm talking about. It was the heaps of praise on the shit that our guys grind out every single day for an entire season. Um, so it was awesome to see him get like, what was it? 40 pitches that he had to throw in the third inning. Just we we wore him down quick.
SPEAKER_00He didn't even make it through three. I mean, he threw what 70 something pitches in less than three innings. He had a ton of pitches. Yes.
SPEAKER_01Oh, most of them went to fucking Jake Bowers.
SPEAKER_00Jake Bowers, I want to see your scorebook from it because that should we talk about that at bat right now? Oh god, how beautiful was that? How many pitches was that? Was it 12?
SPEAKER_01I don't even know.
SPEAKER_00All I know is that it lasted over seven minutes. 12 or 13 pitches, seven minutes and 15 seconds. And of course the pitch com broke in the middle. Right. Oh gosh, it's not working again, you guys. Right in the middle of this super tough A-B. Jake Powers just fouling off, fouling off. I think people have been talking about that A B for a reason. Like it's the best at bat in the postseason we've maybe ever seen. And I think it was.
SPEAKER_01It really shook him up. I had to drive my daughter to her youth symphony rehearsal, so I was like, I'm gonna have to miss part of it, but I'll listen to it in the car. But I'm like, I'm just gonna watch the rest of this at bat, and then I gotta take her to her thing. And then I had to stand there for like, I'm like, oh my god, oh my god, I'm like, I really gotta go, but I can't. I can't miss the bat.
SPEAKER_00That at bat also was with two outs.
SPEAKER_01Wore him down. Staying cool under fucking pressure. That's incredible. I can't. It was incredible.
SPEAKER_00And then and then he took a walk. Hell yeah. And then very next pitch to Yelly is a single. Yes. Just shook him up so much and Yelly took advantage of it, and it was wonderful. Two RBI single. So so pretty. Incredible. It's how we play it. I was also at that game. I took my son and I didn't wear my watch because I'm tired of my watch telling me that my heart rate is getting too high during these games. So I just left it at home. But let's talk about Jake Bowers for a minute because the story is coming out now about he how he almost quit baseball. Have you heard? This like a couple of years ago, how you know he was going up and down, and he was just like, I am ready to quit and go do something else. And his wife got pregnant, and so the reason that he stayed playing baseball is so they could get health insurance. Wow. Yeah. So for those of you who hate America and the healthcare system, you're welcome for Jake Bowers. I guess. You mean me? Is that not insane? Yeah. So he needed to keep playing because they needed health insurance for their family. This is how they got it because this is his career that he stayed with. And now we have our our home run leader for the season. I bet he's taken more pitches than anybody else this season. I think you remember that right. I'm so glad that he didn't quit. Can you believe that? I'm so glad you didn't have enough money to pay for a premium without this job. Jake Bowers.
unknownThe fuck?
SPEAKER_00This is a whole other issue. They even said it on the broadcast because they were talking about that during the Padres broadcast. I forget who it was. I think it was like Adam Amin. They were telling this story about the healthcare thing. He's like, that's a conversation for another day.
SPEAKER_01In game one of this series, I didn't get any audio because I went to a bar to watch it. And because it was Sunday and there was Sunday night football on, it was like dominating. I had like by the time we got to the eighth inning, I went to every I was the only woman in the bar. And I went to every man in there and was like, Are you watching this football game? We should put on baseball. Um, but the bartender said they couldn't change the channel for me. What? Yeah. I was like, come on. I was like, I asked everyone in here, no one's watching the Ravens.
SPEAKER_00Ravens. That's how Jamie and I met, you know. We were at a bar and I asked the bartender to turn the game onto a baseball game. It was the World Series 2011. And I was like, hey, turn this game on. Jamie's like, oh, opening. Because he was sitting next to me.
SPEAKER_01So that sucks. But yeah. And then I figured out that if I'm watching it on MLB TV, I can switch the audio over to our local radio guys. So I don't have to listen to the That must have been better.
SPEAKER_00How are they doing? Because I haven't been hearing them at all.
SPEAKER_01They're good. It's fun. I was actually in the car listening to the radio when Yelly hit that single. Oh. And Elaine shouted, Oh, Captain, my captain.
SPEAKER_00I was like, that's right. Along with a million other people, probably at that same time. Yeah, let's go. I love that. Have you been seeing all the reaction videos people are posting online? Reaction videos from Churio's hit and the Padres and from these games that people are winning. Yeah. It's really beautiful. And the players are seeing them too. Yelly mentioned it during an interview. Oh, it's really cool to go on social media and see how much this means to people. Like people are posting their reaction videos, like from these games, and it really does mean something to know how much this team means to this city.
SPEAKER_01All right. All right, everyone, you know what you need to do then. Post your reaction videos. They've all because Yelly specifically has talked about staying off of social media to avoid negativity as well. So the fact that he's on there and seeing this and talking about what a positive impact it has, I think is we need to listen to him.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, because for some reason y'all have ring cameras pointing into your living room. Yeah, what's that about? I don't know.
unknownI don't know.
SPEAKER_00I don't know. I'm just like, why does this footage even exist? What are you? I don't get it. I don't either. Uh you're just giving corporations your very, very personal data and personal conversations. It's fine. Go ahead. Flat cameras in your own house. That's fine. But you know what? If you're gonna use them to give Yelly some motivation for your reaction shots, I guess go ahead. Let's talk about the bullpen.
SPEAKER_01Okay, it's been amazing. What is it? 25 innings without a run allowed. That's like an MLB postseason record.
SPEAKER_00And the last game was five perfect innings. Yeah. From this bullpen. Five perfect innings has never been done before in the postseason. We got Yuribe, we got Romero, we got Ashby, we got McGill. DL Hall. DL. DL, underrated DL Hall. Jojo Romero is quickly becoming one of my favorite relievers. I love him. He's great.
SPEAKER_01He's fantastic. He reminds me of someone. His face looks like somebody's face. Does he look like Omar Narvaez to you? Huh. I don't know. He's just he's got a familiarity to his face.
SPEAKER_00You know what? I think he looks very kind. I think so too. He got asked, what is this like? And he's like, I've never felt anything like this before with the crowd. Because the crowd was also fantastic in game two. Just really wonderful crowd work. Super excited. And Jojo Mare was like, I've never felt anything like this. This is happening. And then we have uh Aaron Ashby, our actual robot. Everybody in the Dodgers was like, hey, it was weird to see Yamamoto be actually human. You know, like he was he was in tears after he got pulled, and that probably shook him a little bit. But I'm like, I Aaron Ashby though, a redemption arc from last year's postseason. Yes, this man is a machine. He's taken all the hair off his head and put it onto his face, and it has worked in his favor quite well.
SPEAKER_01What do you say to Murph? Like, give me the ninth, I'm ready. Yes. Okay. He's like, all right, get out there and do it. And he did. Incredible. It's just I've I have loved watching Aaron Ashby all season long. I've been so, so all about. I mean, you'd be stupid not to, right? Yes. It's not me.
SPEAKER_00It's not just me, obviously. It's not. And if you if you need to get more familiar with Aaron Ashby, you should go on the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers social media because they're posting all these old gifts and all these old videos of him and Bryce Tarang. And they're so cute. Cute little babies and so sweet. And it's just very, very fun to see how they've how far they've come and what they're doing now. Fuck, I love this team.
SPEAKER_01It's so awesome. So I got into some trouble in our group chat. Well, one person was mad at me for like being so fucking excited at the end of game two. Because I mean, like, how can you not be excited? We got seven runs in the second game. We've had nine runs in the NLCS so far. Last year, we had four total in four games. So, like, we've said this a million times. I say it all the time. Like, to win championships, you need everything. You need starting pitching, you need good defense, you need a great bullpen, and you need offense. We have elite defense. We have an unhittable, unhittable bullpen. Our starting pitching is fantastic. And now the offense is finally coming out. Even in the Padre series, I was like, this is not the offense that we can bring to LA. We gotta bring a different offense to LA. And we're doing it. And so, like, I'm not trying to be jinxy by being excited about the fact that the the thing that we've been waiting to come alive to push us deep into the series. Let's just say it like that, is we have been able to watch it happen over the last two. Can you see how careful I'm being with my word to explain? Very good, Aaron. Good job. So we're uh we're not we're not gonna make any predictions about what's gonna happen. No, it's just it's just been exciting to to see it come to life in the way that it has, especially a game two. I mean, Contreras was three hits, three RBIs, that huge fucking home run. And then that the single where he bat flipped the single. Yeah. Like, do it, do that. We're in the motherfucking postseason, we're playing the the fucking Dodgers, and the boys are feeling good. Like, let's see it.
SPEAKER_00I want to see it. That Contreras home run was amazing, and you have a note here about his home run trot.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it's the longest home run trot in postseason history. Um, it's like 35 seconds plus some change.
SPEAKER_00I was scoring the game, and so I did the score, you know, came back down and looked up, and he was still not to third base yet.
SPEAKER_01He was still doing this.
SPEAKER_00Would I be annoyed if that was any other team? Not if the player had been doing that sort of shit all year. Exactly.
SPEAKER_01That's just how they've been playing all year. It's not a surprise to us. It shouldn't be a surprise to anybody.
SPEAKER_00Well, it's starting to not be because I think what we're seeing is this people are having this conversation outside of Wisconsin right now about what baseball can actually be, right? We've heard like John Small say it, we've heard Derek Jeter see it say it. This is how baseball is supposed to be played. And Buck Show Walter the other day said this isn't small ball, this is just baseball. Right, right. So now I'm like, oh, you all get to change this narrative that you've been not engaging with all year about like what baseball actually is and what it should be. What do you what do you make of this? I feel like you said it.
SPEAKER_01Like, if you've been watching this team all season, then you would know that this is how baseball is played. This is how successful and fun and awesome baseball is played. It's like these people are all surprised now and they're like, oh well, like we've been watching it for for years, you know.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, exactly. I feel like you just you want to be on the winning side because that's the thing. It's like people want to be on the winning side. Yeah. And so now they're changing their narrative so that they are they're like hedging their bets, right? But but this is the way that Brewer's baseball has been played for a really long time. Yeah. Already. So we we know that this is just baseball. You're the ones who've been calling it small ball. I think if you're gonna acknowledge this is how baseball should be played, this isn't small ball, this is baseball, then you also have to acknowledge I'm the one who's been calling it small ball and discounting this team for so long.
SPEAKER_01Sick of it. And I think I think that we can we can tag onto that and add on to that that if this is the way that baseball is meant to be played, then the way that these players are expressing themselves as they are being successful playing baseball this way is also the way baseball should be played. That's right. Abner Rivet should absolutely be jumping off the mound and celebrating a strikeout in the sixth inning in game two of the NLCS. I don't give a fuck. Yep. If if this is how baseball is supposed to be played, these are the boys who are supposed to be playing it and this is how they should be playing it. Right. And we should be excited for that because it's exciting to watch.
SPEAKER_00It's really, really great. I was saying to uh uh Jamie today that that Abner Uribe's kick in that inning was the Molly Shannon, I'm 50 kick. You know that that skit. I'm 50. Like if Abner wants to do the I'm 50 kick, we're gonna let him do it, okay? Um I think they should all do it. Yeah. I'm 50. Like, yes, and uh the bazooka celebration, Wild Bill's been doing that for three-fourths of the year. Exactly. It's not a new thing, he's not showing it off to your guys.
SPEAKER_01Just you just haven't been seeing it. It's yeah, yeah. It's all right. Well, welcome, welcome. Welcome to the party. Maybe you should enjoy it instead of whining about it because it is joyful. And like, I get so mad when I see people hating on the brewers on you know, just wherever. And I don't because I'm like, imagine hating fun and imagine hating winning baseball games, and imagine hating teamwork and like friends and smiles, right? And then like leadership. Just why would you hate what is there to hate?
SPEAKER_00I just don't understand it. Nothing. There's nothing to hate except you feel like you got jaded, or like you feel like your team didn't do enough, and so you're gonna hate the team that beat them, and that's fine. We're not gonna be like that. No, we're not. Let's play some baseball and some home runs. Chica bees up bitching. The thing that I think that is very special about Brewers baseball that other teams don't have is this mentality. Christian Yelich, our team captain, who's been doing well, did not start game one against the Dodgers. Right? And he's probably not gonna start against Snell, like you just mentioned. And he doesn't have a problem with it. And I can't think of many other teams where you're like, oh, we're not gonna start our our captain here, but they know what the best lineup looks like. And it's not it's not Yeli at DH, it's Vaughn at DH.
SPEAKER_01No, it's Vaughn, it's Vaughn against the lefty. Then that's yeah, this is something that we've talked about multiple times this season, is that that's what makes it work.
SPEAKER_00Think about Bryce trying hitting a home run and then it has an next A B, sack bunting. Like you don't see that. Think about Churio being a superstar and also going 0 and 5, but hitting the ball to advance a runner, which he does without hesitation. You just that's I think part of what makes this type of baseball special. It's not that they played the type of small ball, like you if you want to call it that, but it's that each person in the lineup is gonna do something like that. There's other teams where you're just like, oh, that guy is gonna swing for the fences and that's it. That's all that his ego lets him do. This team doesn't have that.
SPEAKER_01Oh, I mean, I feel like that's the the whole win our way thing. I mean, it I guess it goes along with the small ball narrative or whatever, but they've talked about how my job is to get up there and move guys around the base path. My job is to get up there and do something productive, not win games. Oh, who said that? Who was it that said it? It was early in the season. I'm not trying to win a game.
SPEAKER_00It could have been any of them. Yeah, you're right. There was an article in the journal Sentinel a couple of days ago, and they interviewed some sports psychologists who talked about what it takes to get that sort of mentality and how it's like cognitive training, like very intentional cognitive training you have to do with your team and who needs to be bought in before that cognitive training can even take hold to the other players. It was a really interesting article. And I just feel like it's one of these, it doesn't happen by accident, right? And it doesn't happen by just being rah-rah and being motivational and talking about climbing a mountain or whatever Pat likes to do, right? Like there's intentional cognitive psychology in this locker room that is paying off. So it's mental, it's physical, it's emotional, it's just firing at all angles. And I love it.
SPEAKER_01I remember talking to a friend of mine last year about it, and I said the power of friendship, because that's what Murph said. And he got mad about that. He was like, I think that's fucking bullshit. I think that's such a fucking bullshit way to put it because it when you think that that's the only thing that it negates like all of the all the other hard work that really goes into building it. It's not just the power of friendship and we're all friends, and that's why we win games. There's there's all kinds of intentional work, hard work, psychological work, like you just said, that's going on behind the scenes that Pat Murphy is generating, that Kristian Yelich is cultivating all of these things, and that when you say, well, it's the power of friendship, it's like, you know.
SPEAKER_00Do you understand what I'm saying? It is a little hokey, but also maintaining friendships does take work.
SPEAKER_01Absolutely.
SPEAKER_00Right? Like it's not sounds like a guy who doesn't have many friends, Aaron.
SPEAKER_01It's it's true. I mean, it's true, you're right. Relationship building is trust building. And how do you how do you succeed in a game where every guy has his own job if you can't trust that the next guy is gonna if you get on base, you gotta trust that the next guy's gonna move you forward, right? And that's that's relationship building, that's friendship building. Yeah, absolutely.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, let's see if they can carry it through the rest of this series.
SPEAKER_01Cool. Well, we recently posted on Twitter that we were gonna be recording before game three, and we asked some of our listeners and followers for what things they wanted us to maybe touch on in this episode. And since we are getting up there in minutes, I think we're gonna just rapid fire as some of these questions. All right, I like this one. Is Bryce Tarang balding or does he just have thin hair that looks bad when he's sweaty?
SPEAKER_00What I love about this question is that uh our audience knows us. Uh uh, you're the hair aficionado, Aaron. What do you think?
SPEAKER_01Oh, uh he's totally balding. He is balding a little bit. He's definitely balding. I was just the other day when he got back in the dugout and took his helmet off. I was like, oh no, he's gonna have to get his hair tips from Andrew Vaughn pretty soon.
SPEAKER_00Doesn't matter. Every man gets plugs nowadays. We all know you do. But I think that this is a transition into him becoming a Midwesterner. Because I don't know if you've noticed this, but I want to play you two clips from Bryce Charang, where I was just like, oh my gosh, he has he has transitioned. This man is a Midwesterner. Hang on. So the first clip is him being interviewed after game two.
SPEAKER_01How special is this fan base, and what's your message to them? Oh yeah, I mean, this is great.
SPEAKER_00That's it. Oh yeah, so great. Oh yeah. I heard it. Oh, oh yeah, so great. Amazing, amazing. And then here's the second one. There's like heat warning. Does that affect you being, you know, having Wisconsin blood in you now and stuff like that? Or how does that affect you? No, we're playing in some warm weather.
SPEAKER_01Um good thing it's not humid out here, so it's hot, but it's not as humid. So it'll be fun.
SPEAKER_00It's not the heat that gets you, it's the humidity. So that's my evidence for Bryce transitioning to becoming a true Midwesterner. And I think if balding has to come with that, then so be it. Yeah. Oh yeah. Oh yeah. Okay, next question.
SPEAKER_01Okay, over under Woody pitching in the World Series. Hmm. He is throwing bullpen. All I know is if they said now pitching for the Milwaukee Brewers, Brandon Woodriff, I would just like die. I would lose my mind.
SPEAKER_00Yes. Like the Padre fans did when Joe Musgrove came out and put it out. But he's not on the roster for this series. And I think we would know. I don't think you can make surprise changes unless something like somebody gets injured or something. So I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility, especially if they're gonna we didn't talk about Dustin May, but like it's possible we'll need a starter, and I think would I have Woody in there right now? Would I trust uh a Woody who's been injured for so long and so many times in a World Series game? Yes. Yes, yes, I would. In any capacity, in the bullpen S starter, yes.
SPEAKER_01There's a handful of World Series questions. Do you want to answer these or do you want to? Oh, should we wait? Are they jinxy? I mean, just who would you rather play?
SPEAKER_00And uh who do I want to win the AL? That's a different who would you like to win the AL? Well, I do love the Guardians. I love Steven Vote. I think they're on a hot streak, and I think that hot streak can be ended by a team pretty easily. I mean, they seem to have been getting lucky. The Rays have been consistently good all year.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. And the Rays have Freddie. And Freddie's doing so much better now that he's in Florida. Oh, it turns out New York was not surprised at all. I think we all knew that.
SPEAKER_00I think we knew it was gonna be a problem. What he throw is six shutdy yesterday. Yep. I would like to see Freddie again. I don't know. Either one I'd be fine with. You know, the Guardians went to the World Series in 2016.
SPEAKER_01Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_00The Rays have only gone twice, they've never won. We've only gone once and never won. So the storyline, and plus they're both roof, like we could have so many roof fiascos. We could have lots of roof balls. We can call it the roof series. So I don't know. Toss up for me right now.
SPEAKER_01Hmm. Let's see. Can you talk about how Brian Anderson does a way better national announcer than Joe Davis?
SPEAKER_00Aaron, you love Brian Anderson more than anybody I know.
SPEAKER_01I love Brian Anderson so much. I mean, I think anybody who's ever listened to him call any kind of sporting event because he does it all, right? He does college basketball. I think he does NBA. He does MLB, he does golf. He is so professional and knowledgeable. And like he's just he's got this voice and this rhythm. I just think he's incredible. I don't think I honestly don't think anyone compares to Brian Anderson. And we've heard him call Brewers games in a situation where he is not supposed to show bias to the Brewers, and I think he does an incredible job doing both, being unbiased, but still being exciting, knowledgeable, and thorough. Uh-huh. So that's my take. I love Brian Anderson so much.
SPEAKER_00I don't know anybody who can't love BA. What did they say? You know Wayne Jarvis from Arrested Development, his tagline is he's a pro. That's Brian Anderson, man. He's a pro.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_00Brian Anderson might be my longest running baseball crush. Understandable. 1000% understandable. Yes. I saw he was calling a raise game, and he did mention Milwaukee. Somehow, like, so you just know it's just on the back of his head in his heart. He's gonna be professional about it, he's gonna be unbiased, but he's got a little, a little love here, and we'll take it. Uh anymore. There was one about baseball cards. We don't do baseball cards, so I don't know anything about it. Sorry, guys. I can't answer that one for you. I don't understand what it means to pull a card. Like, I don't know what you're talking about. Say I pulled this card. What do you mean you unwrapped it and that was the card that was there? I don't know. I think that's what that means. I pulled it out of the sleeve. Oh, I pulled the Miz. What I I unwrapped it. I don't get it. Yeah, I need to pull it out. Don't you get it? It's a one-one plate. I don't I I I'm too old to learn that. I'm sorry.
SPEAKER_01Someone direct us to a podcast where we can learn about it. Right. One guy, one person on Blue Sky wanted to know who our MVP power rankings were for these series.
SPEAKER_00Hmm. Well, look, I think it's gonna have to be Aaron Ashby for me.
SPEAKER_01I think it'd be hard for me to not pick William Contreras. That's true too. Dude's bad in 409. How do you walk Bryce Tarang to face William Contreras?
SPEAKER_00I saw that and I was like, wait, hang on a second. You only have one out. You're gonna you're gonna walk Bryce Charang. Like, this is this is why playing the matchup is a dumb idea sometimes. Yep. What is wrong with you? Guess an RBI single right off the bat. That was a bat flip single. You gotta. I did think it was gutsy of them in game one to uh walk two batters intentionally to get to lefties. Like that ended up working out for you very well, but it also reeked of desperation. Like, we know where you are right now. Like we know where your mindset is. And even like seeing Blake Snell go online and be like, yeah, I've watched these guys' interviews, and it's clear they're really confident and in a good mindset, and we have are facing adversity for the first time ever in our sheltered little lives. And I don't know, I don't know if we know what to do with it. We're gonna try. I'm like, oh great, love it. Yep. But yeah, Contreras is a good one. I mean, what is he game two? He was responsible for every single tying or go ahead run. Yep. Come on.
SPEAKER_01It's hard to pick, you know. I know that a lot of people have opinions just in general about like the the actual MVP and Cy Young awards, that there are a lot of people who are like pitchers should not win MVPs because they have their own thing, right? They have the Cy Young that's their own award. So, and there's reliever of the year and all that stuff too. So, like it's it's really it's impossible, I think, to pit an Aaron Ashby against a William Contreras because the role that they that they have for winning games are so different.
SPEAKER_00So this is the struggle we face every year with the sausage race.
SPEAKER_01Yes, which we're putting on pause until further notice.
SPEAKER_00Yes, because we cannot pit any of these players against each other, even in a stupid who's hotter contest. Right. We're not gonna do it.
SPEAKER_01So it's pause. Well, speaking of doing that, I feel like that's one of our uh jinx avoiding tactics going into the rest of the week. And like I said earlier, people were mad at me because I was maybe talking very uh see, I can't even. You were just very confident in what was gonna happen. I was really very confident about what was gonna happen in LA. So I wanted to talk about jinxes and avoiding jinxes and what we can do as fans at home. And mine, I realized I went back and looked in my scorebook from last season and I scored every at bat of every game of the NLCS last year. All four games, and we know what happened. And I have not I have not scored a single postseason game all the way through this year. The only one I started was Jackson Cheerio's walk-off game. And I only got about halfway done. So I was not physically marking score at the time that Jackson Cheerio hit that walk-off.
SPEAKER_00So so to anti-jinx yourself, you're gonna continue to not score. Yes, I'm not gonna touch my scorebook. Okay. Are you gonna continue to watch games at bars where men aren't watching football?
SPEAKER_01Oh, do I need do I need to do that? You gotta go back. I gotta go back there. I don't want to go back there. I didn't like it there.
SPEAKER_00I'll pick a different football bar. I I think uh for me, it's like if I'm going to a game, then I will wear the clothes that I knew we've won a game before. Like I wore the same thing to game one against the Dodgers that I wore to Jacob Mizrowski's complete game. Okay. Like did that. So that was good. Also went with the I took my son to game two. So he's always been a good luck charm for us. That's fine. I've also heard like throwing salt over your shoulder, right? Yes. It's good luck, that's the thing. I did ask this question on Twitter, and somebody said death is the only way. Said sorry for your loss. You have to kill whoever's jinxing the team.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_01Oh no, don't tell the group chat.
SPEAKER_00No, not gonna do that.
SPEAKER_01They're gonna be coming for me. I feel like I've given off less jinxy energy, like just in general this season than I have in the season.
SPEAKER_00You have been, yes, yes.
SPEAKER_01Okay, cool. Um good, whatever I'm doing.
SPEAKER_00Bring keep that salt with me. Yes, but I don't know about any other anti-jinks. I think there's like superstition in baseball, it's very superstitious, and there's anti-jinks. Like, I definitely paid the penance when I said that Tatis was due for a homer and then he hit a homer, right? Like Jamie did scooch away from me and didn't talk to me for the rest of the inning. Yeah, it's like I can't believe you said that out loud. I can't believe you brought that into the universe. Very, very firm about it. The other thing I think is like not getting really cocky. Yes. Because like when the Guardians won the NLDS, and then right away it was very fun, and I understand that they are they beat their division rivals and it was a really big deal, and then they posted the stuff online, like the White Sox Stadium with the Spirit Halloween uh banner on it and all of that stuff.
SPEAKER_01Okay, but now that we have a year of reflection, how how about flying the L flag after the NLDS?
SPEAKER_00No, see, I think it I think it's still funny, but it also I think that's what the Guardians are doing because that was a very emotional win for us. Like very, very emotional, but it tapped us emotionally. And now I think the Guardians are doing the same thing. Like they have been really trolling the White Sox before the NL before the ALCS started. I'm like, you guys, I just I get it because they're your division rivals and it was fun, but you know, you have the players being like F the White Sox in the locker room, like that's gonna come back and bite you. You the baseball gods are the only gods I believe in, and I do believe that they hear this stuff. So I don't want to do anything to upset them. I don't want to be jinxy, and I don't want to be unkind to other to other uh fan bases, and I don't want to be cocky because in my experience that's when we are doomed the most, is after like we're the cockiest.
SPEAKER_01Right. I have a tendency to be cocky, but I feel like I'm generally nice to other people's other fan bases.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, you're a you're more of an optimist, I think. I don't think you're cocky as much as you were just our uh super optimist.
SPEAKER_01I was just really hyped after two games. I'm like, let's fucking go. Like it was I'm talking about what we saw. I'm not talking about so much what we're gonna see. I'm talking about what we got to see and what we got to enjoy. That's right. And I'm excited about that. Yeah. So there.
SPEAKER_00So game three is tonight. We got guess gaser on the mound. Gasser v Snell. We're ready to have solid defense. The boys are locked in. I feel okay. I'm excited.
SPEAKER_01All right. Well, yeah, like you said, the NLCS continues in LA. Late games scheduled every night. Boo. Yep. And then um, should we need games six or seven, those will be in Milwaukee on Sunday and Monday.
SPEAKER_00Right. Either way, no matter what, there will be another game in Milwaukee. No matter what happens. So I I get it. Yeah. No matter what happens, I was like, wait a minute. All right, I think that wraps it up for us for this episode, but I'm sure we will be back sooner than we usually are. In the meantime, you can find us online. We're on Twitter at Blue Sky at BrewersBabes. We are on Instagram at Brewers underscore babes. Um, come chat with us. Come hang out in the postseason on the social medias with us. And if you've made it all the way to the end of this episode, please go on Apple or Spotify, wherever you listen, and give us a review. Uh, give us some five stars and some love. Let us know what you're thinking about it. And we'll be back very soon. Bye, babes. Bye, babes.
SPEAKER_02Chilling like a villain. I kept in my feelings.
unknownI just want to show you what I got.
