Welcome back to another episode of Brewers Baits, a Milwaukee Brewers. And Lisa, we're going to the fucking World Series. I know. Holy shit. I can't believe it. I actually don't know if it's sunk in for me yet. I don't think it has for me either. Every time I think about it, I'm I cry again. I cried again today, thinking about it.
SPEAKER_00I think it's gonna feel real on Friday for sure. Right now, I'm just like, what? Because I'm still just watching baseball content, but holy shit, they did it. Can you believe they slept the Dodgers? Okay, look. Here we go. Here we go. Not only, this is I don't know if you saw this. It is crazy. Not only did they sweep the Dodgers in four games, which is what they did to us last year. Oh, you about to read me all these numbers that are the same. Yeah. They had the same number of plate appearances, the same number of at-bats, the same number of hits, the same average, and the same OPB as the LA Dodgers did last year.
SPEAKER_01There were also the same number of walks in the series. Like, what even is this? I don't know, man. It's a glitch in the matrix.
SPEAKER_00That's what I was thinking. I was like, is this a glitch or are we finally back on the right path here?
SPEAKER_01We are. We are. It's like this is what was supposed to happen last year. I was thinking, like, at the end of game four, I'm gonna try not to start crying again. The word that I was thinking that I kept texting to people because every, you know, my phone's blowing up. Everyone's like, oh my god. And I just kept saying, the Milwaukee Brewers are fucking inevitable, dude. Inevitable. You know, come from behind in all four games. Like four games. It's just incredible. And like I know that we all year were like, you shouldn't be surprised. If you've been watching the brewers all year, you wouldn't be surprised. You wouldn't be surprised. But like, I come on, four in a row. Four in a row. I'm pretty surprised. In in the most important series, there aren't a whole lot of rematches, like year-to-year rematches like this, anyway. But this is the only time that a sweep one year went in a sweep the following year the opposite direction. This has never happened before. I mean, right? You remember, I was really optimistic after game two. I was like, there's no way we don't take at least one from LA. Like when we're in, there's no way we don't take at least one. I didn't think it was gonna be game one just because I figured vibes are gonna be, you know, they're gonna be in LA, it's gonna be whatever. Yeah. And then in game four, I was like, man, the Dodgers got their backs against the wall. If they've been playing sloppy because they've been cocky the last couple of games, they're really gonna be. I mean, this is this has been for elimination this whole time, but this really is for elimination for them. They really gotta play that way. And holy shit.
SPEAKER_00Well, because their expectation, like, they did not have a winning season now because their expectations were to be a three-peat. So it's gotta suck to be a Dodgers fan now because you needed to go to the World Series the entire season, and that sucks.
SPEAKER_01Man, in game three. Let's talk game three. I'm so I've been I'm so cocky about it. I've been walking around saying, I hear they like home runs in LA. Okay.
SPEAKER_00We beat them at their own game because the brews can hit home runs, they just they have a different way to play the game during the year that's more fun and smarter. And now now their secrets out. But Aaron, first pitch. Blake Snell, who dominated us last year. First pitch, the announcers are not even ready to start this game. No, they weren't. And our our boy Jackson, gorgeous home run.
SPEAKER_01I uh, you know, I was like, fuck yeah, right? Obviously. And then I'm and then and then Blake Snell proceeds to strike out like nine of us. Oh, he's gonna be. But I'm like, I'm he had a really great game. The number of times I should have been keeping tally for the number of times they said dominate, but like I really feel like that first home run. Have he not gotten that? Have we not kicked it off that way? That we got a glimmer of hope here. Like we can do it. I know it it might sound silly to say, but I feel like that was really important, and I feel like that set a tone for this. Is possible. We can break through and do it.
SPEAKER_00For me, it definitely made me a little nervous because of last year. He hit that one off of Yamamoto in the first inning, and then Yamamoto pitched a complete game ready.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_00So I was like, oh no, Matrix. Oh no, don't do this. Good call, good call. But yes, and then I mean, we had to get Snell out of there. That was rough. But then the rest of this game, amazing. Gasser was fantastic, so good. Bobby Gas, so good. And then the confidence that he had walking off of the mound, unreal, off the charts. I totally agree.
SPEAKER_01I kept saying, like, Gasser looks like the calmest of all of them out there. He looked like he was just throwing a regular game, just out there, just doing it. He looked like the most calm, most collected of all those guys out there.
SPEAKER_00If you missed it, we did put a little bit of a slow-mo video of Robert Gasser leaving after an inning and just the smise on his face. He's not smiling, but his eyes tell it all. I was just like, that is the most confident man in the world right now. Good for him. And Hallelujah. Yeah, he but he hit Otani and then just kind of laughed it off, shook it off, you know? Like, imagine the mental fortitude you have to have to be in this game. Shohei Otani is at the plate. You're pitching against him. You hit him, and you're like, well, my bad. I'm gonna strike out the next batter. Don't worry about it. Like, come on. See that so great, so great.
SPEAKER_01And then um, you know who I believe is a brewer's unsung hero is Dale fucking Hall. He saved us in that game. Saved us. I'm not mad at Aribe for having a blip. Everybody has him, but man, he came in and cleaned up, and there were a lot of incredible performances in game three, but that to me was definitely one of them.
SPEAKER_00For sure. He became the all-time franchise leader in postseason wins. Wow. Dale Hall did with 5.1 innings pitched. Wow. That that game was for him. Yeah. So, and his little southern accent, just being like, Oh, shucks, y'all. I know I could do it. What a delight. Just a delight. Yes. And I know people are like, oh, you left your reband for too long. This is the mistake that Pat Murphy makes, but I don't think so. I think this was actually another chess move by Murphy, and I want to talk about how he plays this game a little bit later. But I know he said he wanted Abner to face Will Smith instead of having a lefty face him. And he also said Abner's been great all year, especially the postseason. And he said, we believe in him. So yeah, he's playing the matchup, but also taking into consideration his pitcher's confidence, which he's gonna need elevated. Because like imagine pulling Abner and then putting in a lefty for Will Smith. Like if you're Abner or Yuribe, you're like, oh, what the fuck? So he didn't do that. He left Yuribe in. Mickey Rojas was up to bat. But once Dave Roberts saw that Murph was gonna leave Abner in, he pulled Miggy and he put DePaula in, who's a lefty to pinch it. And then Murph sees, I think that was bait. And I think that Murph saw Dave Roberts take the bait because then he pulls Yuribe for Hall. And then Dave Roberts panics. He calls back Daula and puts Kike up and just like, you just I think Pat Murphy just made you burn a bat, like a really good bat. What? And your kid's confidence. Like, imagine being that kid. You're about to get an A-B in the pennant race. And then all of a sudden, Dave is like, well, let's do the matchup. You're going. Just burn you. I think it was really smart. So I think that it was a risk leaving Abner in that long, but I think it was a calculated risk to just kind of fuck with him a little bit.
SPEAKER_01Totally. Yeah, good call on that. So good. And then you know, you know, we had DL Hall to get us out of the jam. And then we had the offense. We had Jake motherfucking Bowers. Sorry, there's gonna be a lot of F-bombs in this episode of my bad people. Just the offense had his back. You know, the rest of the team picked him up. And that's that's what matters.
SPEAKER_00That was A Rod said it was the best at-bat he's ever seen. But let me like, I don't sorry.
SPEAKER_01I can't remember which one of those guys said this is the best double play I've ever seen in my life.
SPEAKER_00So anytime someone says the very standard 643 double play in the Padre series.
SPEAKER_01But that was probably the best at-bat ever. Oh my god, what was it? 12, it was 11. It was a 12-pitch, a 12-pitch. I had random people that I went to college with texting me or messaging me at that point. They were like, this game! I was like, I know, I could not believe. No, I could believe it. I just I lost my mind anyway, but I was like, here we are again, two days later, watching another 11-pitch A B by Jake Bowers. How's it gonna end this time? And man, God, I lost my mind. So in uh game two of the wildcard series in 2024, when Sal and Sherio hit back-to-back home runs, I screamed so loud I woke my kids up. And ever since then, still to this day, my son will say, If you're gonna stay up late watching baseball, can you not scream like you did that time? And so this whole series, I'm like just clenching my fist and going like running around. And so uh I didn't I didn't get to like jump up and down in high five and scream and stuff, but oh my god, it was this isn't the first time that he's ended a huge A B with a Homer either.
SPEAKER_00No, it's not. He's been for me. It was that was the moment I think that home run. You know how sometimes they say, I don't know if you know this, but like when you're getting a massage or you're doing a certain yoga pose or something and you just like start crying. Yeah, you know, you're like, oh, there's some pent-up trauma in your hips right here, your body's holding them, and like you've just released that emotion, and now your body's crying because of it. That is what I did after that, AB. Like, I it came out of nowhere. I had no idea, but I just started bawling. Like I was crying and crying. Like the trauma from last season and the season before that, and the season before that has been pent up inside of me. And after that home run, I just I like lost it and let it all out. And I've been feeling just like wonderful ever since.
SPEAKER_01He broke Blake Snell there, too. Like that was it. Because then Garrett Mitchell got up there. Why? It was a second pitch of that. I bet like Garrett Mitchell Homered. I mean, it was like that's it. Snell was amazing. I think he struck out 10, and then Bowers wore him down until he broke.
SPEAKER_00Back-to-back homers to lefties, never been done in his career. Dang. But you know what I said, inevitable. That's the word I've been using for this team. I did appreciate Blake Snell after the game, being like, hey, I came up with Jake Bowers. I saw I've been through his career, I've seen him up and I've seen him really down, and this is really cool for him. And he bested me. I was like, oh fuck. I forget that I really like Blake Snell.
SPEAKER_01That was really awesome. I watched a ton of interviews in there. They were all the guys were so honest, like Max Muncie and Freddie Freeman were both like, I think Muncie said, they're playing really good. We're playing like shit. And they asked Freddie Freeman, like, you know, how are they getting to you or whatever? He's like, dude, he's giving me pitches to hit. I'm just rolling them over. I'm just not hitting them. I'm just not hitting the ball the way I'm supposed to be, you know. And this is it's it's what I've been doing, and it fucking sucks, right? So I mean, there was definitely frustration, and I enjoyed hearing those, but yeah, Blake Snell being like, this is really good for him and really cool for him. I'm like, man, yeah, that's that's great. Yeah, great.
SPEAKER_00All right, let's move on to game four here. Okay, game four. Okay, so we start down 04. Otani gets a three-run homer. I'm like, fuck, is he back?
SPEAKER_01I don't need to talk about how like MLB seemed to already have like several slides like queued up, ready to throw out there on like Instagram, and you know, it was like already prepared. They'd just been waiting to hit play for like five games.
SPEAKER_00So they were like also had every single angle possible. Like, let's watch show homer from this angle and this angle and this angle and this angle.
SPEAKER_01Of course.
SPEAKER_00Okay.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. See, you were you said it the other day. You're like, if Yelly believes that we can come back and do this.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, if Yelly believes that I believe it. Yes, Yelly believes what he believes. So this was mostly a bullpen game. We started Shane Drowing, right? Not great, but then we had this guy called Jojo Romero. Man, he was lights out. He made Max Muncie so mad with his sweeper. Oh yeah.
unknownThat's right.
SPEAKER_00He he did so good. This series, he's thrown three innings and struck out five batters, including Shohei twice. Amazing. That was the deadline. Get man for real. It was. We have this bullpen of Shohei whisperers all of a sudden, because that Ashby outing against Shohei in the seventh. Yeah, oh my god. One out, uh guy on third. Shohei's the leading run. Yep. Dude, three pitches, 85 slider, 99 sinker, swing and a miss. Oh, and then this third pitch is like this nasty uh slider at 86 miles an hour that has the exact same shape as the sinker, right? It's right until it doesn't. You know what I mean? And just made like I've never seen Shoe Otani, I've never seen him take a sillier looking swing. Like he looked ridiculous. I was like, holy shit, Aaron Ashby. He has pitched the most innings of any pitcher this postseason for the Brewers with 12. 12 innings.
SPEAKER_01Look at look at last year opening like every game, and now closing two games where he did the eighth and the ninth, right?
SPEAKER_00Oh my god. Yeah, we didn't even see McGill. Ashby was still out in the ninth of this of this game. I definitely thought Ashby'd be pulled and McGill be coming in to close it out. Definitely, same, same. I think when they announced NLCS MVP, everybody was like, who's it gonna be? Because it really could be Ashby. It could be Ashby. But then I found out that the voting for that happens in the sixth inning or like by the sixth inning. Really? And that crazy inning was the seventh inning that Ashby had that he struck out Otani with that. So if you had had another inning, who would it be? Because he definitely deserved it. You could make a great case for Aaron Ashby to be the MVP of this series. I mean, Jesus. But it went to Jakey Bowers, Jakey B. Fuck yeah. Who had another I mean Jake had another great game. He had an 11 inning or 11 pitch at bat.
SPEAKER_01So that scored uh scored Contreras. Well it's a groundwell double. Uh they both had like automatic doubles or whatever. Against Glas now.
SPEAKER_00Mm-hmm. Who was great? Like that's the thing is that whole pitching staff is fantastic. There's not a weak pitcher there, but offense mate just made them look silly. Jake Bowers took, I did this math. Jake Bowers took 15% of the pitches in this series. That's incredible.
SPEAKER_01I absolutely believe that. That's amazing. Isn't that great? Using that math almost degree. Yep.
SPEAKER_00Almost math degree.
SPEAKER_01Man. So I had to work the next day, you know, as most people do on a Friday. And we watched the watched the highlights in all my classes. I was like, look, this is only three minutes long. You guys can. I'm like, let me tell you a story about the big mean LA Dodgers. You're such a good teacher. They were like, what? I have my I have my glasses going. Let's go, brewers on their way out the door. That's right.
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_01But watching, I mean, and then how about David Hamilton? Oh, yes. What was he batting like for the postseason? Like 571 or something? Fantastic. I don't know what it was, but like lights out the charts. Yeah, that home run. Pat Murphy was talking about that. I'm sure you saw the interview. What what'd he say? He said, uh, Hamilton's really bad at bunting. He's like, he's he's good because he can run, but like he's not great at bunting. He's like, so first time I was like, get out there and lay down a butt. He's like, he did. It was and so the next time he came up in the lineup, they're only gonna give him pitches to hit. And that's what they did, and that's why he home run. How many home runs did Hamilton hit in the regular season? One? I don't know. Two? I don't know. One of them wasn't maybe two. I think one of them wasn't a real one. It might have been like a like a little league home run. Am I right? I don't remember.
SPEAKER_00What are the chances, dude? But I do remember I do remember now Murphy saying that he told Hamilton to drop an early bunt with two outs, right? Yep. And then I think the chess part of that though is like he's not that good at bunting. No, yeah, he uh he is though. He like leads the league.
SPEAKER_01That's because he does it all the time. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Every time he gets up there, and he's that's good. I I I think that is a little bit of murph. Like, hey, we're telling you this because now, whoever we play the World Series, you don't know if we're gonna tell him to bunt or not. Because I don't think he's a good bunter, so I don't want to put him in a situation where he has to do that. When in actuality, if you're gonna put somebody up there in a bunting situation, it's Hamilton is a very good choice to do that. So yeah, I do remember that.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, but that was in the end, that was just an insurance bunt, not bunt, home run. Because it was Mitch who got the it was Mitch who got the go-ahead run. That's right, go ahead home run. And then Hamilton just, you know, tacked another one on. Incredible. Oh man.
SPEAKER_00Mitchell got another home run off another lefty. Back-to-back homers off of lefty. Yes, that's amazing.
SPEAKER_01Inevitable, inevitable, incredible. They wanted it, man. They wanted it bad. I don't think that's to say that they didn't want it before, but there's there's I've been saying this all postseason. I've been saying it all postseason. There's something different about this team. There's something really different. Yes, and it's everybody's showing up, and at the end, when they, you know, giving out the awards and stuff, Jake Barrett said, We did this shit together. Crying. Yeah, oh man, I cried so much.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, what I loved about this. Okay, so the last at bat, Ashby versus Paez. Ashby's have been throwing sinkers all night, all night, like 98-99 sinkers. And suddenly, what does he do for the last out of the game? Just curveball after curveball after curveball, top of the zone. Like, what are you gonna do with that? I thought it was brilliant. I thought it was a great way to end the game. It was so fucking exciting. I also loved how they didn't have this reaction that you see teams have when they're going to the World Series. They're like, okay, good game. Yep, good game, good game. But I don't know if you noticed this. They did the trophy presentation, you know, and I think the guys that they all went inside and got ready to celebrate and then came back out for the trophy presentation because they all had their goggles on already. I saw that, yeah. So I went back and I looked at the last four pennant races, and none of the teams and the NL and none of the teams had goggles on for it. It's like the Birds are gonna celebrate just in private. I thought that was hilarious. They just all have their goggles on, and then you see Jake Bowers saying, What did one of the guys say? He's like, Are you how does it sound and go to the World Series? Bowers says, Sounds pretty fucking good. Yep.
SPEAKER_01Oh man.
SPEAKER_00So great.
SPEAKER_01Uh I might start crying again. I cried so much when it happened, and then I cried so much the next day, and I still cry when I think about it because I think I still don't believe it.
SPEAKER_00It's been a long time coming. I mean, before either of us were born, yeah was the last time. This team is gonna be a good one. So they're people, we're not that old. And you're coming to Milwaukee for the first two games. Yes, but I'm not going to them because they're outrageously uh overpriced right now.
SPEAKER_01Let me can we talk? Are we ready to move on to me being mad? Yes. I just I'm fucking really mad. I booked my trip to Milwaukee in August, and then as things started looking more and more like they were gonna happen, then I started requesting off work, and then I made some sub plans and you know, blah blah blah. And I'm like, the last thing I need is my ticket, the last thing I need is my ticket. And then when they went on sale to well, it was to seasoned seat holders who got to get you know first shot at buying them. The cheapest ones were nine hundred and thirty-seven dollars, and then when they went on sale, the Wisconsin residents standing room tickets were eight hundred dollars. Yeah, and I just can't do that, unfortunately. I don't know many I don't know anybody who can. And that is the fucking shit that pisses me off. Is that I don't know anyone who can either. I don't know a lot of fucking people who can afford to just do that. I read, and I don't know if this is true, maybe you can fact check me on this, somebody, but I read that MLB sets the price of World Series tickets, not necessarily the club. To me, it felt like another example of Major League Baseball continuing to make games inaccessible to fans. You can't afford to go. I can't how many people in Milwaukee who have Supported this team for decades, who live in the city of Milwaukee, who work in the city of Milwaukee, whose children grow up in Milwaukee, who live and breathe it, can afford to go drop $1,300 on a ticket to one baseball game, who have been there to support this team for decades, who have gone in multiple games, who have tailgated, who have bought the shit, bought the gear, bought the tickets. And now, now that we're finally there, now that we finally make it, you're gonna make it unaffordable for me to go. It makes me so mad. And I was looking at the tickets in Tampa, games three, four, and five, and they're half the price. That it's cheaper, it could be more affordable for me to fly to Tampa. It might be cheaper for someone who lives in Milwaukee to fly to Tampa to watch their team than it would be for them to be able to afford to go. And it feels like price gouging to me.
SPEAKER_00It is, it is, it's it should be illegal, it should be criminal. And let me tell you what else. When this happened in the the World Cup, right in New York, Mayor, Mom Donnie, worked with FIFA to get 1,000 tickets for New York residents to the World Cup that cost $50. So nothing is set in stone. These rules aren't like made by God, right? They're like, it's the market, it's whatever, whatever. I'm like, no, no, no, no, no. This is not Jesus dictating these prices to you, right? Humans make these decisions. You're right. Humans have the ability to do whatever the fuck they want with them, and this is what they're choosing to do.
SPEAKER_01There's a there's a law going into effect in DC in January that will cap resale prices on tickets at 10% over face value. So if you go and buy a ticket and you sell it on StubHub, you can only get 10% more than what you paid for it.
SPEAKER_00It sucks, right? Because as season seat holders, we paid for everything up front. You know, I don't have that kind of money, so we got a credit, a new credit card. We put all of that money up front. And then I told Jamie, like, the only way we can actually afford this season strip is if we sell some of these games. Yeah. Right. So like we weren't able to go to all the games because it's unaffordable no matter what. And that's on top of the season seats that we have bought for like the last five years, right? Which is just like every year they get a little bit more, a little bit more. And even front row Amy said that next year her seat, her seat prices have doubled. Yeah. She's gonna be second row Amy because there's a seat in front of her now. So it just feels really unfair. It sucks. I I hate it. I didn't expect these prices to be like this, honestly.
SPEAKER_01I didn't either. I didn't think they would be. And I don't know. I've never bought, I've never bought a World Series ticket. I've never had the opportunity to. Yeah, yeah. I don't like it. It makes it makes it feel like it's another way that they have made the game inaccessible to the people who bankroll the whole thing, to the fans who show up and the diehards and the people like it. It's just the people that live in Milwaukee and care about Milwaukee as a city and care about the brewers as a team. Very, very, very many of them were priced out. It makes me angry. I'm angry about it.
SPEAKER_00And those same people, let's not forget, here in Wisconsin, have already given this team as of recently half a billion dollars for that new row for Amy, right? For Amy, like that's what that money ended has ended up being for. Yep. Half half a billion dollars. And you're telling me there's not a single fucking politician in this state right now or in this county who can be like, hey, MLB, let's actually work together to not price out the fans who made this team what it is. This is where I think a lot of the blame needs to go, too, because you're just you're getting rolled over on this right now. Yeah, yeah. I don't know. You're lucky to not be here during this like political season because oh, the election and everything coming up, but and now the brewers are like this uh talking point, like back and forth, and it's just everything about it is disgusting. But like, if there is a will, there's a way. You just you have to have the will. Yeah, that's true. No, you're not wrong. Call call your representatives, call your centers. Like, this is something can be wrong about it.
SPEAKER_01I'm not extra mad. You're fucking right. Because we were we were here, we were talking about the stadium funding, and we were talking to state politicians, and that's what he was saying. He's like, call and let us know. Like, tell call your representatives, tell them how you feel. Like, show up and vote.
SPEAKER_00There's nothing we can do, it's MLB. Are you kidding me? There's nothing you can do. There's always something you can do. Yeah, it makes me mad. I'm sorry, Aaron. I really want you to go to a game. Maybe somebody can sneak you in. But at the very least, at least we're gonna be able to so we're gonna tailgate together on Friday.
SPEAKER_02Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_00And that'll be a lot of fun. That should make my world famous pasta salad. Everybody should come if you can tailgate. Oh, even though it's fucking $75 for parking. Like that's it's unnecessary. It is.
SPEAKER_01It's the same parking lot, it's the same parking lot you've been parking in the whole fucking season. Right. Nothing is better about it. Just because you can do it doesn't mean you should do it. Also, you weren't gonna make any money. You haven't made any money this far into October off of that parking lot. So now you're gonna like, you know, what money are you missing out of that you need to charge triple the price? It's bullshit. It's such bullshit.
SPEAKER_00I'm mad all over again. And let's talk merch too, because I went to the team store yesterday with my daughter, and we got there at 11, and there was already a line almost all the way around the stadium. Like they're making a lot of money. Yep. And if people are like, oh, that's just supply and demand. Well, fuck you. Just because somebody can gouge you doesn't mean that they should gouge anything. We have to have better standards as people. Yeah, come on. Yes, you're right. What's wrong with you?
SPEAKER_01We were gonna sell out of every single game of the World Series in Milwaukee, no matter what. Yep. So, like you made the choice, not you, Lisa. You brewers and you have you made the choice to take advantage of every person that wanted to be there. Like, literally to just take advantage of them because you could have sold them for $300. I'd have paid $300, I'd have paid $400. I'd have paid $600. Yeah. You you could have done that, but you you had to squeeze everybody for everything they had instead. That was your priority instead of making it accessible to the fans who have been with you this entire fucking time. And what make what helped make this team how special it is. Why do you think William Contreras says, I want to spend my whole career in Milwaukee? Why do you think William Adamas said, I wish I could stay in Milwaukee, I want to be in Milwaukee. Why do you think that is?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, the the it's the fans who make that happen for them. Exactly. So what are we gonna have now? We're just gonna have a bunch of like I need it to be routed as rowdy as it was during the Padre series, during the Dodgers series. I need that shit to be rowdy. And I don't know, is it like classist or anti-classist of me to say that if you spend $3,000 on ass seat, you're not gonna be fucking rowdy?
SPEAKER_01Like, I don't know, can you be rowdy? You probably can't afford as many beers, which helps some people to get rowdy.
SPEAKER_00Just saying that's true. But like the fans who helped get them there can't go there now, by and large. And that fucking sucks. It's it's uh yeah, I think we'll see how it is after after game one, the energy in there. But I will say the energy in the rest of the state and the rest of the city, especially, is gonna be off the charts. It already is. I can't wait till you get here because like you're gonna feel this. Yeah, it's crazy here. I'm excited. I can't wait. There's a uh I just showed you this new website for people to see where all of the watch parties are gonna be, or like what bar is gonna have watch party when. It's called crew tober.com, I think. So if you're looking for a place to go, crewtober.com, find your bar, find your crew. So check that out. Or if you are gonna be in the parking lot on Friday night, you can come find us and try some of Aaron's famous pasta salad. Yeah, it's really good.
SPEAKER_01It is really good.
SPEAKER_00I'll make extra. It'll be a good time. We're gonna try to get there at four. It's in the parking lot, so then so come find us. Do it. Last time we tailgated, we had a nice conversation with Tim Dillard. We sure did. That was fun. Yeah, gave us a few. I don't know if he had fun.
SPEAKER_01Got a nice picture with him where he's towering over us, even though he likes scrunched down like oh yes. The man is tall.
SPEAKER_00Yes. Okay. So listen, is can I be mad about something? Yeah. This is supposed to be a happy episode. This is a happy episode. I'm just kidding. Okay, not mad. Not mad. Let me make a suggestion. Speaking of fan experience in the stadium. So, longtime listeners of this show. I feel very, very well know my long-standing irritation at the 414 dancers during Roll Out the Barrel doing that weird hop on one foot, hop on the other foot, bounce thing that they call the polka, and it's not the polka.
SPEAKER_01I've not experienced it. I haven't seen the 414 dancers because I don't think I've been to a game in like two years.
SPEAKER_00Oh my gosh, hang on. Let me just send you a clip really quick of what they do so that you have this is important. You need the context for this. Because you know I love the polka. I know you do. I have polka with you. You know, I have to do that. And I have I have also danced while you played polka music on stage.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_01All right, all right. Watch this clip. This is not a polka.
SPEAKER_00No, it's it's a hop hop. Okay. Listen, I'm you're gonna be angry with me now, okay? Oh, but I'm not angry with you. Angry along with you, not as well. No, no, alongside with me. Okay. So I think that the way that they do this dance is really disrespectful. And I think this can be a very easy but very important thing to correct with Milwaukee and the World Spotlight. So now is the time to make this happen. So bear with me here because I have to give you a little bit of a history lesson to create the context for why I think this is so important. Okay, so I'm gonna set the scene for you. It is Europe 1840s, the pendulum swing from the 1790s French Revolution, right? Off of their heads, still in motion. The monarchs that have ruled Europe for generations have just defeated Napoleon, and they are pushing to restore a social structure based on wealth and aristocracy. This a lot of this might end up sounding pretty familiar. Uh so in order, in order to maximize their own wealth, their own power, they exploit workers, right? They have deathly working conditions, they have long hours, they have low pay. There's also across the continent starvation because there's a potato famine going on that's largely caused not just by the crop blight, but by English Parliament enacting tariffs on grains that has made other foods very expensive. And then British rule did have some relief in place for a while, but then they scaled back any relief and economic interventions and just left people to fucking rot, right? Like I said, this might sound familiar. So 1840s Europe, people are sick, they are hungry, they are dying, and then there's this rapid industrialization happening all of the sudden. It pushes a lot of people out of work, people are in squalor, families are living on the streets, and pretty soon people are starting to get pretty fed up and they begin to come together in a political and intellectual reckoning. So revolutions start happening in waves in Europe everywhere. So there's class warfare on the streets, there's students building barricades against the armies, there's workers rioting, there's peasants launching insurrections against their governments. It's like massive and it's bloody. There's hundreds of thousands of people who are dying fighting. And meanwhile, the monarchs, the elite are doing what they always do to tamp down dissent, right? Censorship, restrictions, they suspend freedom of the press, they change the voting laws to take away the right to vote for 75% of the middle class, they ban political gatherings. And at the same time, here there's this dance called the Waltz. And it is going through a transformation. So during the 1790s revolutions, the waltz came onto the scene as a form of like as a peasant dance, right? Like all of a sudden the peasants are doing this dance that shocks the elite class because there's a man's arm around a woman's waist. Like that's very scandalous. How dare you? But by the 1840s, where I'm talking about, people now are mostly fine with the waltz. But what they cannot stand is this new version, this cousin of the waltz called the polka. Because now these couples are grabbing each other's waists and there's three stepping, it's all frantic. It's this frantic, like hoppy bubbly dance. And the aristocrats are truly outraged and truly insulted by the lewdness of the polka. Like they are deeply offended. And so all these working class people who've just become politicized, they see this, they see this reaction, and they decide to embrace the polka. They make it part of their strategy. Any chance they can get to taunt the elites, they take, right? So they polka at their protests, they polka on the streets, they polka at their weddings in their taverns, they polka intentionally to signal their rebellion. So they're polkaing for their own liberty, Aaron. This is a dance of the people, for the people, by the people. So this is this is more than a dance. It is an intentional, defiant expression of liberty in a society that represses everyone but the select few. That's the context of the polka. And it doesn't stop there because soon it makes its way to the states thanks to migration and becomes a huge part of mainstream culture, but it does not stop being a political tool. So as the US gets closer and closer and closer to civil war, there's these composers who, you know, there's no lyrics to a polka, but you you write the music. And these composers are reflecting their own politics in the titles of the polkas that they write. So, for example, Abraham Lincoln's campaign gets a huge boost from a song called The Rail Splitters Polka because they wanted to showcase that Lincoln wasn't just a lawyer. He had spent his youth splitting logs and that, you know, he was like a blue-collar kid or whatever. And that polka, it took off like crazy because polka was huge in the States then. So it took off. And then everybody got a polka. Mary Todd Lincoln gets her own polka, Ulysses S. Grant gets his own polka, James K. Polk gets his own polka, right? And this is like the literal soundtrack to the election that puts Abraham Lincoln in the office. It's the fucking polka. And then the craze begins to fade among everybody except newly immigrated Central Europeans who, by and large, settle where? Here, Wisconsin, the Midwest. So they're in a new country, they've left everything they know, they don't speak the language, the food's different, the customs are different, you know, all that all of this stuff. But what have they brought with them? They're concertinas, they're accordions, so they can keep their heritage alive with what? The polka. It is so it's everywhere in Wisconsin. You know this. It has been ever since the community hills, Friday, fish fries, there's entire festivals. The polka is the official state dance. So this is the context in which to say that I know it has a silly name and it kind of looks silly, but it is not just a silly dance. It is actually deeply rooted in our culture as a monument to liberty, to revolution, to freedom. And I just think it would be a really nice thing if the very they're very talented, they're very beautiful, if the 414 dancers at Ampham could learn to do it properly during Roll Out the Barrel. Just do a proper polka. That is my end react. That's what I'm gonna apply for that. Wow. That's what I want. We should teach them because you and I know how. It's not that hard. It's three steps, and I can't dance for shit. I can do the polka.
SPEAKER_01You know, they have always danced on the dugout during Roll Out the Barrel, and they used to be like stadium employees that would do it because I asked them. I had written to them and asked them, like, hey, like, I'm gonna be celebrating at uh Miller Park and I want to figure out how I can dance on the dugout. And they said, Well, we won't let we can't, we don't let fans do it because it's a liability. Totally get that. Definitely like we can't do that. But they had stadium employees that worked there before, and it they looked like they knew how to do it, but I don't remember that was so many years ago. Maybe they were doing the weird little hop thing.
SPEAKER_00I this weird little hop thing has been happening for a few years now. I don't understand it. You know it would be very easy to learn.
SPEAKER_01Like, if I can dance a polka, yes, surely, surely a professional dancer can learn to do it very quickly, especially the most basic step.
SPEAKER_00Even barrel man with those big feet, he can do it. It's not gonna be a problem. There are men bigger than barrel man that do the polka every weekend. You know what I'm saying? Just like, I just think it would be a really nice thing. And if you want to actually represent Wisconsin, actually represent like the whisco culture that we're all talking about. This is a silly looking dance, but it's very important. It's not hard to get it right.
SPEAKER_01I've gone, I've been to a lot of ballparks too, and like, you know, everybody has they got the seven thing stretch, they do they do uh take me out to the ballgame, and then they do whatever their song is. And I've been to a lot of ballparks, and I'm like, all right, I get it. We like sweet Caroline, but what does this mean to this city? I get it. We like you know, country roads, but what does that mean? We're not in West Virginia. What are you talking about? Why are we singing this song here? You know, yes. So like in fanway, they do shipping up to Boston by the Joff Kick Murphy's. Obviously, I get that, right? But like I haven't been to a lot of stadiums where I've understood the connection between the country song they picked and how it ties to their city or their region or their history or their team in any way. But I know, you know, with the brewers that roll out the barrel has always made sense to me. It goes with the team. It absolutely does. It's part of the history of the city and the state. Like it's the connections run deep. And I feel like that's something that the brewers do really well. I feel like that's something that we've talked about. I mean, with their with their giveaways and their you know, the the merch and the the way that they that they consistently tie stuff to fans and Milwaukee and the city and the state, but that's a big one.
SPEAKER_00It's the missing piece, the actual dance itself is the missing piece, and you will see just people uh in the in the stadium doing the polka during roll at the barrel correctly because I don't know if they still do it anymore, but when I was a elementary school child in Wisconsin, we learned that shit in third grade. Yeah, you know, so my first wish is for the Birds to win the World Series. My second wish is for the 4014 dancers to learn the polka. All right. Someone alert them.
SPEAKER_01We should see if they want to come on the podcast in time.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, just so they can voluntarily yelled at us. Do you know how the potato famine ties into your dance? Oh, you don't know? Oh, you don't know? Sit down.
SPEAKER_01That was her problem.
SPEAKER_00They're very, they're very uh talented, they're very pretty, you know. They're fun to watch, just I can't watch them during the seventh inning stretch. I just get mad. All right, thanks for letting me get that out. Thanks for sharing it with the with everyone. We should note that we have no outline today either. No, sorry, I didn't do one.
SPEAKER_01That's on me. No, I never I never can do one anyway. Now people are gonna be like, you know what's episode I loved was the one where Aaron didn't write the fucking outline. So much more better and fun.
SPEAKER_00Is it though? I don't know. Thanks for teaching me about the history of Abraham Lincoln's musical tendencies. And folks let us know what they want us to talk about. Let's go with Bowers A-B's, his resolve. We talked about that already. Uh plans for Woody in the World Series. What have you been hearing?
SPEAKER_01Only that if Harrison and Chad Patrick are going on the roster, we might as well throw Brandon Wooderf on there too.
SPEAKER_00Because we're gonna play in them.
unknownOh my god.
SPEAKER_00Well, he did he is throwing. So, and he says, yeah, he said, I'm really working to try to be on the roster in the World Series.
SPEAKER_01I've I'm that's that's where I'm at. He ought to be on the roster, absolutely. And you know what? I would rather see him on the mound than Kyle Harrison.
SPEAKER_00Really? Uh-huh. Like I think it's like emotionally, it would be very cool. It would be really rad because Woody hasn't gotten to play a postseason game. He just he hasn't gotten to play. And I know he really, really wants to bat. It would be very wonderful to see him play. But if he tanks, then then what? Then he's done. I don't know. Right. I think we may I think we might see him on the roster. But it wouldn't surprise me, and it also wouldn't disappoint me if we didn't.
SPEAKER_01Wouldn't surprise me either. Yeah, I I agree with you. I think it would be awesome if it if it ends up happening, but I'm not gonna put money on it or um I I I just said I'd rather see him than Harrison, but that doesn't mean I don't want Harrison on the roster. You know what I mean?
SPEAKER_00That doesn't mean I don't want yeah. Yeah, because I could go south real quick. Yeah. It could. Uh emotionally it'd be great, but yes, baseball-wise, I it's I have no idea. Yeah. Um, okay. Let's see. Who else do we have here? Please cover the love that the Burs have from outside the US. We have a small but very passionate fan base in the UK, which is great. One of our first listeners was from the UK. Mm-hmm. So we love the UK, the UK brew crew. I wonder if the Brewers will ever go play international now, like they made the Dodgers do earlier.
SPEAKER_01Oh, maybe. I hope not. I know. A lot of bad things about making athletes sit on planes for a long time and then play games.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. With Jalen Hurts, we just saw this. Right, exactly. Well they happen. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Um, I know we have a big fan in Germany. Hi, Julian. Hi, Julian.
SPEAKER_00So that's nice. I wonder Julian is probably gonna have opinions about this history lesson. I bet he will. I bet you Julian knows more about the polka than any other human alive. Just randomly. I'd say we should have him on, except that he doesn't like baseball at all. Um, okay, next one. Who is in the Bruce Babe circle of trust for the World Series? Like, which players do you trust implicitly to play?
SPEAKER_01Implicitly. Jackson Cherio, Aaron Ashby, William Contreras, come on, Jake Bowers, Christian Yelich, all of them? Everybody? Any of them, all of them. Yeah. That's what Jake said. We did this together. We did this shit together. When I saw Hamilton in the lineup, I was like, in game three, I was like, mm-hmm.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_00But god damn it if he didn't prove me wrong. That's right. Now you feel pretty chill about it. I do. Oh, okay. Hamilton, sure. Yeah. Yeah. And even Joey Ortiz, he got through. He did. He he got through in game four.
SPEAKER_01Oh man, it's a couple of fucking bang bang plays. He's so good at third base. There are a couple where I was like, all right, fine, you grounded out a couple of times, but at least you saved a couple of hits for sure, maybe a run.
SPEAKER_00Oh, those double plays at the beginning of the series were everything. Tyler wants to know do we keep sticking with the offensive platoons for the remainder of the postseason?
SPEAKER_01Since they both so well. I think so.
SPEAKER_00Is it like a if it ain't broke, don't fix it sort of thing? That's what I'm thinking. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01We we talked about that a little bit last time when Yellow was not in the lineup against a lefty. And it's how everybody rolls with what their role is.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Yeah. I the the only thing, the only caveat I think is please do not take Garrett Mitchell out of this game right now. Right, right. Because for him, it doesn't matter if there's a lefty on the mound. Right. So in general, yes, the platoon will maximize your advantages, but also Garrett Mitchell. Garrett Mitchell. So yeah. Um, but otherwise, yes. I think it's been working wonderful so far. I don't think you change it up. Let's see. Uh do we think the week off will help or hurt?
SPEAKER_01You know, there was so much talk about this. Like once they started doing the bye week when they added a wildcard team and then they were getting the bye week, and um, we're like, does it actually hurt? Does it actually help? You know, and I think talking about the the record of teams when they've had the bye and then they've come back, it's it's actually swayed, it's pretty even, but it is swayed more towards teams that get the week off have won more. So I think just kind of the fact that they've already done it, that they've already taken that time off and they've they've used it to the purpose that they needed. I mean, Bryce Tarang showing up and staying up all night in the batting cages to make adjustments. Like they know how to stay loose, they know how to, and they definitely know how to keep their heads in the fucking game. So I I appreciate the rest. I think, especially for the bullpen, especially for Aaron Ashby, especially, you know, for all the pitchers. Um, I think it's, I mean, I hate to spec, I'm crossing my fingers now, I hate to speculate too much on it, but I feel like the time off is well deserved, and I'd rather face a tired Tampa Bay or Cleveland team when I've had a few more days' rest for sure.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. The whatever whatever team we're gonna face, their bullpen is just gonna be not as rested as ours is. I'm glad that the boys got some rest because they were hungover as hell when they came back. Did you see them coming back home off the plane? Like the news is the news is there, like, welcome home there. Sunglasses and water. It's nighttime.
SPEAKER_01Jacob Majowski looked like he was gonna throw up.
SPEAKER_00He was like, Don't talk to me, don't talk to me. So that's great. But they were back at it. I think it's fine. I don't think they've stopped working. And I saw they have this machine. I don't know if you've you've seen it, I forget what it's called. Uh traject, trajecticam, or something like that. But it's basically a pitching machine, except where the ball comes out, they have like a digital version of whatever pitcher you're gonna face. Oh, yes, I've seen this. It's wild. Yeah, it's crazy. And so you can go and you can face any of the pitchers that we might be facing with this, and then it mimics their pitch and the shape of the pitch and the velocity as well as it can. The only thing it can't mimic is uh the release point, right? Like I was gonna say Aaron Ashby's curveball. Remember when Aaron Ashby was a starter with just a curve or a little slurve? Yeah. Um yeah. Now I think we have I think we have the technology where it's fine. They can also get live pitches, you know. Why wouldn't why wouldn't you go up against Kyle Harrison to give him some A B's? Why wouldn't you go up against Gasser to give to give yourself some A B? You know, so they can they can do simulation games. I don't think it's gonna hurt at all. I think the mental game maybe would have hurt in the past, but I'm not worried about it this year. No, I'm not at all. No. What do you think Craig Council thinks about all this? I don't know.
SPEAKER_01He doesn't care, man. He's making his money. He can use some of that money to buy a ticket to the World Series at MB.
SPEAKER_00That's what he should do. He should he should actually probably buy it out and then give these tickets away. Yeah. That you know what, Craig Council, you want us to stop booing you, that's a really good thing to do. Take the fifth, what is it, $55 million or something bonkers like that? Buy five thousand of these seats and give them away to people who are in Milwaukee and have been that's what you should do, Craig. And then we'll stop booing you.
SPEAKER_01And to me, that's been talking shit on you every day for the last two years. You should definitely give one to me. Yeah, absolutely.
SPEAKER_00You still have that picture of Craig Council hanging up, though? It's I still have it. I have it. I once in a while I'm like, why do I still have it? You were just betrayed. This will go a long way. This is our suggestion. This is I think what we should do. Force Craig Council to buy everybody tickets. We got a big agenda.
SPEAKER_01We gotta teach these 4144 dancers how to do a polka.
SPEAKER_00We gotta watch his team win the world series. We gotta uh plan a tailgate. Yeah, make some pasta salads. All right, maybe he will.
SPEAKER_01All right, well, let's get on it because we've only got a few more days.
SPEAKER_00Yep. Okay, so I don't think we're I mean, we're probably not gonna record before the World Series again. But maybe we'll go sometimes we go live when we're together on Instagram. Yeah, that'll be fun. That's fun. We can do a little bit of that. It'll be fun. And uh if you're gonna be, so if you're gonna be around this weekend, let us know. Come till they come hang out with us, hit us up. It'll be fun.
SPEAKER_01All right, well, I don't know what else to say except bye babes and go brewers. Bye, babes.
SPEAKER_00Milwaukee brews, Milwaukee Bruce, Milwaukee Bruce, Milwaukee, let's play some baseball and get some home run.
SPEAKER_02Let's play some baseball and get some home run. Milwaukee, Milwaukee.
